Filler Wads in 28 gauge load

I sat down to load a few trial shells swapping the SG28-II wad for the WinAAHS wad. The problem is that the SG28-II is SIGNIFICANTLY shorter than the Win wad. What is the best way to fill the void? Can I put a filler wad over the shot? If I put the filler under the shot (which is what I understand to be the standard practice) it will cause a significant amount of shot to sit above the shot cut. Is this a problem, or will the set back cancel this problem. I've never used filler wads or had to deal with filling this much space.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Not trying to be a smarta$$, but why? Are you even sure you can safely swap those wads?

First, I'd start with a recipe specific to that wad instead of doing a blind component swap. (I'm hoping that Ballistic Products has done my homework for me and has an appropriate wad column).

Try to find and use a recipe with a bulkier powder. Increase your shot drop slightly. Last resort: I've read posts with filler jury-rigs using dry beans, styrofoam, cardboard, felt, and overshot cards.

I was expecting these types of responces but was hoping I could get past it without fully explaing my situation, apparently not.

I'm using Unique powder because I have lots and it's the cleanest burning powder I have. I want to use the SG28-II because it patterns better and is lower pressure than the Winchester/Claybuster. BPI has not done any load testing with Unique and their SG28-II. They said it's on the list to do and they just havn't gotten to it yet.

I guess I should have left the background out and just asked what's the best way fill a little extra space in a hull? They make filler wads for a reason and serve a valid purpose. I've never used them, and want to make sure I use them correctly. Everythign that I've read in manuals and online articels is that overshot cards/filler wads/can be added to any load where necessary because they do not change pressures significantly. If this is wrong, then say so. If your not willing to give me any guidance on this issue because I'm doing something outside of a published manual manual, then say so (actually, I guess you pretty much did). If you look at the published data for Unique and SG28-II wads, you'll see that what I'm trying to accomplish is not pushing the envelope.

BBB,
What the folks are saying above is the straight story. I think your research, so far, is getting mixed up. The use of a filler material, wad, puffed oats, Cheerios, pinto bean, etc. is appropriate, and will not create any dangerous condition.....WHEN YOU ARE STEPPING DOWN FROM ONE SHOT LOAD TO A LESSER AMOUNT, AND YOU ARE USING A TESTED RECIPE TO DO SO. Folks regularly create 3/4 oz. 12 ga. loads using a published 7/8 oz. recipe, and taking up the excess space with a light weight filler. Under such circumstances, it is a sure bet that the pressure will go down. In such case, the recipe wad is still used in the lighter load.

You have stated "I want to use the SG28-II because it patterns better and is lower pressure than the Winchester/Claybuster". How do you know that you will have "lower pressure and better patterns" with you NEW recipe?? You are intertchanging one wad for another which changes all the parameters for that recipe. Unless your new recipe is tested for pressure / velosity by a confident ballistics lab, you have no idea what you have made with your swapped components. Stick with published data or you could get into trouble with excess pressure that could blow your gun up.
