Ok, I am having a hard time in trying to find a checkering set to buy. I am not sure if Dem-Bart, Gunline and W.E. Brownell are all out of business? Every website I go to shows discontinued. I can find a $300 set of solid carbide on Amazon, but that is a little more than I want to pay.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am looking for 20 lines per inch set.

How about these? https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tool ... 26276.aspx

Straight off Brownell's website. You can also find handles and replacement cutters.

They do go in and out of stock occasionally. I have noticed that.

I called Brownells today and they said they would be receiving 1 set in about a month and there are 3 people who have it on backorder. The next shipment after that would be sometime in May. Yikes!

I have ordered direct from Gunline.

http://www.gunline.com/index2.html

They don't have an online ordering system so you have to email or fax your order to them. They don't publish a telephone number (so, I wont post it here), but it's fairly easy to find via a Goggle search. Mr. Frantz was very responsive and shipped quickly.

I did contact them via email and Craig responded that they are behind and trying to catch up with their major distributor which is Brownells, then they could fill the direct orders. I emailed back and asked for an estimated ship date and he hasn't responded as of yet.

I just remembered that I have seen a gunline Checkering set at Woodcraft. If you have a Woodcraft store you could check there. They might even have it online.

Thank you for the info, I checked their website and they are not listing any checkering tools.

I have seen a set sitting in the case of chisels at store in Cleveland. I wonder how long it’s been sitting there.

I'm not sure how long it sat at Woodcraft but I called the Cleveland store and it is gone and they have dropped checkering tools from their product line.

Oh bummer. I was going to call them and go grab it for you.

Can you get by with a single line cutter for your first project or do you need a spacing tool as well? How many lines per inch?

I think that my first project will only require single line cutters as I am re-cutting existing but very worn checkering. that is 20 lines per inch.

Here is a link to a company that sells single line cutters that are carbide. I have a few of them and they are a lot better than the gunline steel single line cutters. They’re pricey but you could get to work instead of waiting.

Also if you’re interested a friend of mine wrote a great book on checkering called the final touch. It is a great book.

Hi Craig:

I aint too smart about using the internet so I have no idea as to what you are requesting. Pewrhaps it wpul be betrter that we use a telephone. If you send me a phone number to enable me to contact you, I will do that.

Be well,

Leomat
