By this time tomorrow night I'll probably be the owner of a used 12 ga Citori XS Special. So now I'm looking for a solid 12 ga 1 ounce load recipe at 1200 FPS. I will be using the old Rem/Peters Blue Magic hulls... I have thousands of them. I'm told that they can be loaded following current Rem STS loading data. Does anyone "KNOW" for sure? I also have about 250 STS hulls. I do want to stay with the Rem STS configuration of hulls, as I don't care to experiment with various hulls, powders, and wads. I'm using a MEC Grabber loader. Later on, after getting used to 12 ga skeet shooting, I'll want to go to 7/8 oz loads in the 12. Hopefully I can use the same hulls, primers, and just change the wad. So much has changed since I loaded 12 ga 25 years ago. So, what say ye, reloading guru's. THANKS

Remington Hull 1 oz. lead 16.5 to 16.8 gn 700X Win 209 primer TGT12 wad Currently, I have modified this load for Noble Sport primers and I drop about 17.4 gns 700X to get 1200 fps. This load has plenty of pressure headroom and with a Win primer has published data up to 18 grains of powder while still being well under the max pressure limit.

Basic, inexpensive 1-oz 12-ga target load:
Remington hull (I've loaded tons of 80's vintage Blues with this recipe) Green Duster wad 17.5-18 gr Promo powder Any standard primer (Rem209, Win209, Fiocchi, NobleSport, etc)
For a 7/8 oz load, switch the charge bar and use a Clear Duster wad. Only adjustment between the two loads should be to the wad guide.

That 18.2 grns. of American select is great for 7\8ths oz. loads too. Should be right at 1200 fps. and low recoil. I us it in the WIN. AA hull. CB0178 wad. {win. 12L}

My Favorite: Rem Hull W-209 or Fio Primer 17.3 Clays or Clay Dot DR XL-1 wad or any clone of the WAA-12SL or TGT-12 Rem or clone. 1 oz. shot
For 7/8 oz. load Same except CB0178-12 wad or Clear Duster 7/8 oz. shot

THANKS I've only been reloading for about 6 months or so, but here is what I've been using (after some approval from this group): Remington GC's (same as your STS/Blue Magic) 1oz lead 18 grns Promo powder 1200fps (as long as you have a good scale save your money and use Promo. I only pay $90/8lbs ;-)Cheddite 209p primers DR XXL (pink) wads The reason this is such a great load for me is because I can use the same exact components if I want to eventually load 7/8oz loads (only 16.5 grns of Promo for 1200fps @ 7/8oz loads). Have fun, and enjoy the new Citori!

Let me share with you what I call my lazy mans loads.
Remington hull CCI 209 primer DRRT12 Downrange wads 1oz hard 8 or 7 1/2
Now for the lazy part I never have to change anything except the powder bushing to do these loads. 17 grains of PROMO for ~1175fps (singles, doubles)
19 Grains of PROMO for ~1260fps (handicaps)
Based on my last cost for components and figuring 5 reloads per case, the lighter load costs about $3.25 per box and the heavier load is about $3.32

Yes, well, RGB was a little cryptic if you don't know the code ... REX is a Hungarian powder and is pretty good stuff according to Burnt Powder (who knows these kinds of things) and everybody else I've ever talked to who loads it. REX-0 has a 'Bullseye-ish' rate and REX-1 is 'Red Dot-ish', and both are fluffy powders that are pretty handy in filling hulls and solving dished crimp issues. Plus, it is considerable less costly than other powders. 'Reloader's Friend'. GS

/ Quote: REX is a Hungarian powder and is pretty good stuff according to Burnt Powder Well, I learn something new every day. The only foreign made powder I ever heard of was Vita V.........(whatever its called)... Maybe somebody could do a brief overview of some of the foreign powders, for those of us who don't know about them? /

Sorry about that. Tend to be long winded talking. Slow typing. The last time I bought any REX it was around $10 a pound or a little<. I just ran the $$s again. I am still loading at approx $3.20-3.40 a box.
I am loading 16.2-.4 grs REX-0 Chedditte or NobleSport primers @$125 * 5000 Down Range Pink or CB4100 (Found some a year or so @ $55/5000, bought either 15-20,000) 7/8 oz #8 shot AA hull old and new 1220 fps.

Just checked Grafs, Rex Powder 2.2# is $27 Making 8.8# $108. Since we're looking for cheap compare it to Promo, 8# for $87, you just paid $21 for that extra .8# of Rex. Doesn't seem like such a good deal to me. is there someone a lot cheaper on the Rex? I'll stick with my American Made Alliant.

Cost ... eh ... it's relative: I load a lot of PB & SR7625 and think it may be a bit underpriced. I don't know how far you are from Winfield, but Powder Valley has REX in both the kilo and 25pound size. Perhaps BP will chime in, but the benefits of REX are not just the price, but substantial volume in low-doses and clean-burning. GS

Thanks for all of these suggestions. Where are they coming from, please. I have not checked all suggestions in the 5th edition of the Lyman reloading handbook, but I can't find many of these listed. I'm not an experimenter and don't like to substitute unless I can read where it's safe.
Not trying to offend anyone, just being very careful.
Thanks .

If you accept that a medium-strength primer is a medium-strength primer, meaning: Win = Rem = NobleSport = Fiocchi = CCI-T&S = Cheddite CX-2000 (which you have to in this day & age of primer shortages), AND you have wad cross-reference tables (stickey, above), you will be able to find virtually ALL of the given loads on: http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.aspand http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/index.aspxor http://www.rexpowder.com/GS
