I just purchased an SPI 20ga. Sporting and want to shoot 3/4oz.
I have been shooting with Unique but Vectan A-1 looks promising.
A-0 is a possibility too.
I would like to hear your experiences with it either positive or negative.

Maybe A1 will be ok, but A0 is so bulky you almost can't fit any combination of powder and wad in a AACF hull, let alone AAHS hull. To be fair, my experience had been with 7/8 loads, but if you use Claybuster 3/4 oz wads, I bet your results will be the same.

What about a Remington hull using a 7/8 oz. wad?
In your opinion what 20 ga. powder fits best using the CB 3/4 oz. wad?
I have little experience with anything other than Unique.

This is my "go-to" 7/8th's ounce 20-gauge load that I settled on in Remington Gun clubs:

Image

A0 makes for a fine 3/4 ounce load too, - just use the 3/4 ounce Claybuster CB-0175 wad and switch to your 3/4 ounce charge bar. They will cycle a Remington 100 with authority.

Or use any of these A1 loads for 3/4 ounce in the taper wall hull (Remington) :

I use the one highlighted in red, just with a W209 primer instead on the cold 209P.

Jasp01,

I use 17.0 gr. Of AO, CB1075-20 wad, 20 gauge STS Hull and Winchester 209 Primer and it works very well on the skeet field.

I would recommend this load to anyone shooting skeet to load.

My favorite 20 G recipe is 20/28 in AA hulls Win 209 primers and Claybuster 3/4 or 7/8 wads. Having said that I load a lot of GC hulls with Unique. It’s bulkier than 20/28 and gives better crimps in the roomier Remington hull.

Two loads different hulls keeps loads for two very different guns easily identified. Alliant powders on the shelf at my local gun-shop makes the choice easy.

I use the 14 gr load in the data that Republican highlighted. very sweet load

I also load 3/4 oz in cheap Federal hulls with 16.0 gr of A-1 over a Fed 209A, a Gualandi brush wad with x insert as a spreader load.

Very clean, and does the job on very close targets, even out of a full choke.

Anybody loading A-0 or A-1 with 3/4 oz. and the standard CB 7/8 oz. wad?
Seems I have a number of those on hand and would like to use them up.

I don't, but a filler, or OS card will fix the crimp issue.

How determined are you to use them up?

I tried this and the crimp rushed way in. Too much space.

I've had very good luck with Vectan powders A1, A0, and GM3 for 20 gauge 3/4 oz. loads. I've used the load data on BPI's website. I've got a bunch of Herter's hulls (they're Cheddites) that I want to use up and there's a good load using A0. For A1 I think I used Fed hulls but I'm not sure right now. The GM3 works well with WST hulls.

Others have mentioned problems with dishing crimps. I solve that with overshot cards. I make my own from Pop Tart boxes and use a $5.00 5/8" hole punch from a craft store.

Good Luck.

Dan

I second Republican's reply, quote "A0 makes for a fine 3/4 ounce load too, - just use the 3/4 ounce Claybuster CB-0175 wad and switch to your 3/4 ounce charge bar."

That is for Remington hulls. I loaded up 10 bottles worth of A0 and will order more.

I must be a genius then - I ordered 44 bottles of A0 my last order.

Not so fast there Bob ...

Technically, 'Genius' status involves also buying equal amounts of A1, and AS, *and* doing so during the free shipping, and free HAZMAT specials.

But I'll give you "very smart" status, - hows that ?

But if you really *do* plan on making up some 19,000 rounds of 3/4 ounce 20-gauge loads, then I guess you automatically get 'Genius' status by default.

And if you happen to make them 19K 20-gauge rounds on a MEC 9000, then you advance to 'God' status.

But I'll give you "very smart" status, - hows that ? :D

But if you really *do* plan on making up some 19,000 rounds of 3/4 ounce 20-gauge loads, then I guess you automatically get 'Genius' status by default. I only load 7/8 oz 20 GA. Since I shoot 20 GA in Dbls, 12 GA, & 20 GA registered events, I never felt the need to load 3/4 oz - still don't. Checking my BPI data, I see that they say that 16 grn of A0 will push both the 3/4 & 7/8 oz loads at 1200 fps - which seems strange to me. I use 16 grn in my loads. Forty four bottles of A0 equals 48.4 lbs times 7000 grn/lb equals ‭338,800‬ grns divided by 16 grns equals 21,175 loads. Perhaps your calculations were for more powder per load - like maybe 17.8 grn?

And if you happen to make them 19K 20-gauge rounds on a MEC 9000, then you advance to 'God' status. Come on R, you know good and well that I'm a very satisfied Spolar owner/user. Why would I want to trade down to a MEC?

Actually I didn't know that. If I did, I forgot. Enjoy the Vectan, - you made a good choice.
