Actually there is a bit more wiggle room there than is apparent. You will find that the cam plate will easily push aside far enough to let the projections pass by. The close proximity of the cam to the punch is why I limited the width to the .035 inch like I did. However if you made them any narrower, they would be too fragile and would probably break off easily.
