Does anyone know if this is a straight wall case. I should know this to order wads.

Yes, it is a straight wall case.

I've had good luck with Claybusters 7/8 and 3/4 oz. wads and Fed 20S1 wads (but the Feds are expensive).

Good luck.

Straightwall, fiber/paper basewad.

I load up some hunting loads with them as you can get a bit more performance with them than tapered. Fed 20-S1 and Gualandi wads.

I believe they are but I have been using claybuster 3/4oz. wads and 15.5 grs. of greendot powder with good results and good stack height.

Yes they are and they call for a larger dia. wad. I had bad luck with the fed hull and the larger wad from CB. I gave the wads away and went back to the rem gc hull. I am not saying the wad was the problem but it was the same load as the rem hull. I shoot the factory federals and they go in the can

CB doesn't have a 20g straight hull purposed wad.

The Gualandi wads are for straight wall hulls and perform outstanding. SG20-M is nice and has a lot of loads. That's the wad I use for Fed and Fiocchi and Herters. Although honestly I have loaded up a bunch of Fed TG 20ga using the CB1078-20 or WAA20 wads, and was happy with the results when shot and chrono'd. However, I did load them and shoot them that week usually, and didn't candle any shells to see how the wad was keeping the powder in place. There might be some powder leakage around the wad I suppose if you carried them around a bit.

Anyways, here's the SG20M, very good sw hull 7/8oz wad:

I believe the ONLY tapered wall case Federal ever made was the Champion II. It was 30 years ago and I doubt they made it in 20ga. They were nice cases, loaded well, did not hold up worth a d***. Top Guns (12 or 20 ga) are straight wall.

Same here with the SP20. Can't find them anymore but I use my one remaining bag of WAA20F1 wads as well, although sparingly.

I found that the tall steel base on the Federals seemed to stick in some of my guns, and I have gone to using Remington hulls exclusively.

I’m going to bring this one back and ask a question.

Here is my recipe, from Hodgdon site:

Federal/Estate Hull
17.4gr Universal
20s1
W209
7/8 WCM 8.5

Anyone running into stack height issues with these hulls? I’ve had to add half of a cheerio to the bottom of the shot cup to get acceptable to perfect crimps. I measured the wad and it’s actually has a longer OAL than that of a SG20L so switching to those wouldn’t help. I tried a CB1078 in the same recipe and that didn’t help. Really want to use these hulls as I have a very large quantity but don’t want to have use Cheerios to make them work and switching Powders is a tad out of the question.

Anyone know of a cure?

Weigh your shot drop. If you are using a MEC machine, I'll bet your drop is light when using mag shot. I use a taper reamer to open the shot cavity from the bottom to get closer to the max allowed by NSSA Skeet rules.

If you won't change powders, the only other option would seem to change wads. I see the WW AA20 wad is also listed on the Hodgdon website with your primer and powder.

Have you tried lowering your precrimp and then adjusting you crimp as necessary?

The Gulandi wad will sit flat on top of the powder drop. The 20S1 and many other wads have a deep powder cup, making the wad go down onto and over the powder. SG wads sit flat on top, no cup, letting it take up more column space.

Well well well. Did not know that. Time to order a bag to see. I think I’ll try the Mids due to wanting to load some 1oz loads for Quail.

Anyone have any load data using Universal I could have. Primers in my stash right now are Cheddites, Fiocchi, WIN, Rio and Wolf.

I use Orange Duster wads with WSF powder. Slightly dished but have had good results. Some reloads stick in Briley tubes and some won't. I load the Federal 20's twice and pitch.

I only load 3/4 ounce in those Top Gun Feds, but I do use the 20L. A little pricier than most CD and DR wads, but I like them in the SW Fed hull.

Shoot me a PM and give me your snail mail, I'd be happy to send you a baggie of them, let ya try them out first.
