I have been reloading clay dot and green dot in Remington hulls but am running low. I bought Red dot today out of panic of nothing available. I found a recipe on Alliant that will work for hulls with Win 209 primers. I was sure that I would find a load in my layman's manual for a 1oz load with Remington hulls and Win 209 Primers when I got home. It didn't happen.

Am I stuck just using the red Dot for 1 1/8 loads only?

I only have Win209 primers and Reminon hulls.

I've loaded 3/4, 7/8, 1, and 1 1/8th all with Red Dot. You can find published load data for all of that.

My current 1oz load is 18 grains of RD in a Remington hull and a WIN primer and a Claybuster wad.

Aliant's website has 1 recipe For Remington STS/Nitro27/Gunclub hulls, matched with a WIN209 primer..

Load -1oz
FPS -1310
Primer -Win 209
Powder - Red Dot
Wad -REMR12L
Grains - 20
Pressure- 10,100

There are quite an abundance of loads using a REM209P primer. I have no idea if a Win 209 can be substituted for a REM209P.

What do they say the speed of that load is?

I loaded many pounds of Red Dot into one oz loads and they worked great. Dig around in the older Lymans books and you will find more to use.

I guess that seems about right. My loads chrono at about 1240ish.

Many jugs of Red Dot and Promo used. Love that powder. 1oz loads are my main staple. I use 19 grains w/Win 209s.

Very happy with my main target load.

Rem STS hulls
Win 209 primer
18.4 grains Red (which loads almost exactly to same WEIGHT as RD)
CB8100 (TGT-12 clone) wad
1 ounce shot

good luck, garrisonjoe

Before Alliant had much in the way of recipes for Promo, I called to see if it was true that you could just use the recipes for Red Dot. I was told that was correct and that it was a two-way street...IOW, Red Dot could be substituted for a Promo recipe.

You can take any 1-1/8oz load and reduce to 1 oz payload, adjusting the wad to accommodate. The result will be a 1 oz payload slightly faster and reduced pressure than advertised for the published 1-1/8 load.

Call Alliant with the load you wish to use. You might find that you can use the Winchester hull data for a Remington hull with the Win 209 primer and the powder you wish to use. Ask about a possible hull substitution.

TMK the only caveat is that it doesn't meter the same and may vary more lot-to-lot. So the recipe remains the same but the hardware (bushings) need to be verified.

Used to dump 18gr with a win 209 and cb8100. Have since decreased to 16.8 and no noticeable difference in broken clays but it goes farther and easy on the shoulder.

I load Gun Club hulls 1 oz with Red Dot. AA Hulls 7/8 oz Red Dot. Color keeps them separated
Data straight from Alliants on line manual. It’s my go to 12 G powder.

Side note many SxS shooters are using Red Dot in 1 oz 2 7/8 inch 10 G target loads. Data tested and circulated among us. 100 years ago factory 1 oz 10 G shells were produced.

There's many recipes for 12ga 1oz loads and RD, you just have to look. I have three old 10ga SxSs and use RD 12ga 1oz data for it. 18.5grs of RD works great. I also cut the shells to 2 5/8 so less 16ga filler wads in the plastic 10ga wad are necessary for a good crimp.

I load 1 oz in nitro 27’s and STS’s with 17.3 grains of red dot in a claybuster tgt 12 wad with a win 209. They chronograph around 1170 and pattern really well. Stack height and crimps are good. That is my goto one ounce load.
