I haven't meet anyone from this forum that shoots in this part of the state.

I usually shoot sporting clays at Richmond Hunting Club and skeet and trap at CCKC (Bristol Wi). Heading out to Bristol for some fun today.

I shoot trap often at Downers Grove SC in Morris and X-Line in Kankakee. Both are very good places to shoot.

Not what I would call NE Illinois... but I will get down there sooner or later.

I usually go to McHenry Sportsmens Club (McHenry, IL) or St.Charles Sportsmens club in Elburn. Drove by West Chicago club once but haven't shot there.

I've been to Richmond a couple of times this spring. It's a very nice facility. And since I'm new to the sport, the instructor there is very good and very patient with me.

DGSC and X-line are both plenty far NE for me. They are also both about equal distance from Chicago as the others mentioned and both excellent places to shoot.

Boy. I was hoping for more info around here, but seems I am striking out. I live in the city and it appears just about every public place to shoot is at least an hour or more drive (with open traffic).

Guess I was a bit spoiled when I was in CA.

Anything in NW Indiana?

I haven't been shooting since moving to Chicago about 1.5 years ago. I am really gettin the itch, but I just don't enjoy it enough to drive 2 hours for it. Maybe I need to take up golf instead....

I'm open to any suggestions to anything closer.

Check out this web page http://www.claytargetsonline.com/list.php/IL

If you live in the city your choices are limited due to space and local laws. I drive 30 miles north to where I shoot (Richmond, IL or Bristol WI) and make an afternoon of it. If you like to shoot its worth the drive.

Jerome81,

You could check out St. Charles Sportsmens Club in Elburn. Or, there is Aurora SC. Both are just off of I-88 and Rt. 47 west of Aurora/Naperville area.

I live in the Antioch area and shoot at bristol. Every now and then I go up to McMillar Range in Eagle WI (outside Elkhorn). They have a 300yd range and a nice sporting clay range.

Have not tried Richmond for sporting clays. Do you have to be a member?

You do not have to be a member at Richmond to shoot SCs. You can get a SC membership for $100 which gets you $10 off each 100 rounds.

Heading to Bristol tomorrow for some skeet and trap during the afternoon assuming the rain holds off.

I think that the closest you are going to get to Cook county, is the Maywood SC. 12 trapfields, great targets, and some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Here is the website: http://www.maywoodsc.org/index.htm
I don't know how many forum members shoot there, but we get a good crowd there on Wed night, and Sunday in the morning. I think that there is an ATA shoot coming up in the next 2 weeks.

I'm in the Cary area and I've been going to the Des Plaines conservation area just south of Joliet, it's free. But a long haul.

You should save your gas money and put it towards more shells! :)

As Mike above mentioned, Bristol has a nice range. Up in Johnsburg there is McHenry SC for trap only, St. Charles SC in Elburn has trap, skeet, sporting clays and rifle/pistol range.

As for used guns, go check out Cabelas. But, be sure to visit the store, there might be a real bargain on the used gun rack that is not listed in their online library offerings.

Speaking of Bristol, heading there tomorrow for some Skeet and Trap. Open from Noon to 5:00

If you search around SGW you'll find that Berettas are well regarded and have a significant following. You'll also find that the more experienced members will always advise "newer" shooters to get a used gun from a proven manufacturer with a proven design rather than spend the same amount of money on a new, "lower quality" gun. ( I follow that line of thinking myself)

From the description you gave it looks like you've got a good deal waiting for you. If you can get some more details such as what barrel length, chamber size, and which choke system it has you will be able to make a better comparison to some of the same style guns you'll find on the auction sites. You may also want to pose this question on the "I love my Beretta" thread.

Lastly, about gun weight, the weight of the gun is one of the factors that helps reduce the felt recoil. A heavier gun will absorb more recoil than a lighter one.

Living in the city means you are equally inconveniently located for all of the clubs in the area. Used to be a really nice club on the lakefront, but that's way old history. With the improvements in the expressways in recent years, you're really not that far from a lot of great spots. By the way, you're now a flatlander and despised by the cheeseheads, no matter what they say. Don't overlook a couple of clubs south of the city that aren't really as far out as Downers in Morris, IL. I'm thinking Palos (in Frankfort, IL) and Frankfort (in Mokena, IL) Sportsman's Clubs. That's the problem with shooting clubs in the metro area. They have no permanence, and end up relocating every sixty years. Actually, Maywood Sportsman's Club (in Elmhust, IL) is probably most convenient, if you can find the entrance.
No sportsman's clubs is part of the price you pay to live in a gun free city that never has any shootings.

Northbrooks Sportsman Club would be perfect, except it's private. I frequently shoot at
North Shore Winchester in Franksville, Wisconsin. The Illinois tollway takes you almost right there so it's fast from anyplace northeast. It's public and you can just show up and get squadded with a group for sporting clays, trap or skeet with no hassle. Prices are reasonable and they have shells and other supplies, and you can rent a gun if you need to. Also no Illinois FOI card is needed because..IT'S WISCONSIN!

I shoot trap at Naperville, which is just south of downtown... Naperville. Only ten minutes from work!

I'm trying to get decent enough to try SC out in Elburn.
