I'm looking at a project slug gun. I would like as strong an action as I can get without breaking the bank. Any suggestions? If there is not much difference I will probably go with a Stoeger for now.

IMO : Stoeger is a good choice. I have both 12 & 20 ga Uplanders , The 12 ga is 6yrs old use it for deer hunting here in Eastern Virgins with both buckshot & slug just change the choke tubes. Personally I find the Uplander like Federal ammo over the less expensive stuff. Have never had a issue with either of my Uplanders. The 20ga is great for Dove , Quail, & Pheasent. Uplanders have pretty nice wood and with a little stock wax look better. As for the changable choke I find Tru-locks chokes work best for me . If you decide on the Uplander hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine.

CSMC makes a beauty, the RBL. I have the RBL in 20 gauge and 28 gauge. Love them. Fine craftsmanship, good looks, straight pointing, and MADE IN THE USA!

Generally, doubles are regulated for shot, and tend to badly cross-fire slugs..... but there ARE exceptions, and not brand-related. That said, I have seen and shot a couple that were outstanding with slugs! One was an Ithaca, one was a Parker, and the last one was an L.C. Smith. (But I have shot a LOT that cross-fired by as much as 6" at 20 yards, and that was with each barrel!!)

The Browning BSS are rugged and you can easily find them for less than $1,500.

I agree with the cross fire issue on some double's. For strength, you might want to look into a Winchester Model 24. Besides strong, they are a pretty classy looking box lock double. They've been out of production for a while but can still be found. Prices will vary with condition. Good luck in your search!

I'd go with the BSS or the Bruno on a budget. If your' a wealthy sort, jump right up to the Wichester mod 21.

I just can't see anyone shooting slugs out of a Winchester Model 21. That would be just plain dumb in my opinion.

Daly/Miroku 500, with it's massive .400 hingh pin, but should be opened to like cyl/ic. Also, as Frank mentioned the 311. There are a number of them with 30" barrels. Cut 2" off.

CSMC makes a double barrel slug gun. Or just go buy a Paradox gun. Or a double barrel rifle, see Cabelas Double .45/70 or dixie gun works whomever makes it. Your idea isn't without merit it has been done however.

A double barrel shotgun is intended to shoot flying birds. It's made to be light, balanced, and point and swing like something alive. Slugs are for poor people who can't afford a real deer rifle, or somebody that lives in a State where the authorities force their use on deer. A shotgun makes a lousy rifle. Never but never shoot slugs through any shotgun that you are in the least proud of. Especially not a fine side by side double. You'll wind up breaking stocks and greatly accellerating wear and tear on the gun. Mossberg makes an excellent slug gun. It's cheap. It's not at all likely to break. And if it did break it would be no real loss. And, if you just had to shoot slugs through a double gun, I'd buy a Baikal. They are rugged, cheap, and only a Russian mother could be proud of one.

Vincenzo Bernardelli used to make a special slug SXS before they closed and then reopened with a different product line.
These were specially regulated for slugs and had adjustable open sights. Maybe you could search for one of these.
A couple of friends have had slug doubles made up from existing doubles, one from a Baikal IZ43 the other from a Greener Empire. Both were regulated by the same smith and both will group their slugs in a 8 inch circle at 50 meters. Regualtion involved removing the ribs and machining special packing at the muzzles.
