A friend from Chicago is looking to get a new shotgun for skeet. Being "the only friend that knows firearms", I've been asked to help him find a good local shop. Can somebody give me a few suggestions for a good source north of the city? Preferably one that stocks Browning and Beretta. Thanks.

The app says it can take up to 30 days. Mine took about a week longer than that (to have in hand) last summer.

Check out Blythe's Sport Shop in Griffith, Ind. Their inventory is far greater than any Dick's Sporting Goods and will rival a Cabela's, and they price competitively.

For a shop devoted to shotgun sports, try John's Trap Guns in Libertyville. You have to call ahead because he's only open by appointment. 847-549-6226

Gat Guns in Dundee retails both Browning and Beretta. Cabelas in Hoffman Estates also.

Gander Mountain in Geneva had a few used Browning Golds ($900-ish), and Beretta 391's when I was there today.

Any of the various Dicks sporting goods locations aren't likely to carry the B-guns.

You could also go to Cabelas or Bass Pro, just across the border in Indiana.

I'd go Gander or Cabella's. Cabellas is going to have more, but Gander might have just a bit better prices (at least on Guns, ammo's expensive)

Have you thought about going out of state? I don't know the specifics of IL law, but in Michigan we follow the federal and can purchase long guns from any adjoining state.

I'm sure you can find some really nice gun shops in IN.

Something to think about.

Firearm Owners IDentification card - pronounced "FOYD" to rhyme with "annoyed"

Illiniois law requires you to have this card in order to own or purchase a firearm or ammunition. Also, if you are shopping for a firearm you must show it to the store personnel before they will let you handle a firearm.

This system has been on the books since, I think, 1968.

Firearms Owner IDentification card. State issued. An Illinois resident can't buy or even have possession of a firearm OR ammo without having a valid card.

I have a friend that lives in Chicago, I was going to give him a single shot NEF for a Christmas present until we found out what a PITA it was to own a gun there.

JR Sports Aurora - Beretta Gallery
Mega Sports Plainfield / both have excellent selections and Mega Sports has more guns in one place than you're ever going to see.
Also, Cabela's in Hoffman Estates.

Maxon's in Des Plaines or Bass Pro in Gurnee, Dick's in Niles or Gander Mountain in Kenosha, WI. I would call first to make sure they had what he was looking for in stock though. For off the wall selection nobody can beat G.A.T. in Dundee, as previously mentioned.
