I have a small collection of older breech loaders and I'm thinking about adding a vintage or antique muzzle loader. I expect to have damascus barrels in good, gunsmith inspected, condition. I should explain that the gun will spend 99%+ time in my display case, but I would like to shoot it if for no other reason to impress the guys at the gun club. I plan to start with very light loads, just enough to go BOOM. My concern is pressure in the chamber/barrel. Question is: would firing the gun with no shot (just powder) result in lower pressure that if there was a small load of shot? Remember, the desired end result is shooting the gun, not necessarily hitting anything.

I have shot "report"/blank loads at times, for demonstrations and such, but I have found that they REALLY dirty up your barrel. Make sure that you have a good over powder card wad.
If you'd rather do some real shooting with your M/L shotgun, we'll be glad to walk you through it.

There is a company that makes smokeless powder shells for those old Damascus barreled guns. They shoot great and cleaning is fast.

SmokinTom,
I believe that the OP said that this was for use in a muzzle loader, not a cartridge gun.
By the way, what part of Ohio are you from?

We run Poplar Creek Long Rifles in Dayton, and our club is considering hosting the 2015 NMLRA trap territorials for Ohio.
Just trying to see if folks might be interested in attending.

I have found Alliant Black MZ to be really good in muzzle loading shotguns
and in my black powder shells.
Had a set of brass shells made for my 16 gauge double.
You might find this helpful.
