Thanks again, Randy.....just one quick question: Do you know if the data for the 12 gauge 2 3/4" Winchester AA HS hull can be used safely with the older Winchester AA hull (non HS)? Thanks in advance..................

Yes, Winchester has published that both the AA and the AA-HS 12 ga. hulls use the same data since 2003 or thereabouts. That's just 1-1/8 oz. of #5 Nice Shot @36 yards. The bull is a one inch circle: it patterns roughly the same as the better lead loads. For a general pheasant load, I'd use 1-1/4 oz. and a bit less choke.

All kinds of data-- just use 10,000 PSI or less loads, according to Hodgdon.
If you are shooting through a 3-1/2 in. chambered gun, then the full 11,500 PSI loads are fine, as 3-1/2 in. guns have a 14,000 PSI MAP.

Randy . I thought with the new wads and powders of today wad pressure was not a factor ? Any input on this would help . Also of the powders listed in these recipe which one is reliable below zero degrees . My load lost its pop when it got real cold last season and had to go back to steel . Thanks , Gregg .

If you're referring to the Precision Reloading Winchester HS hull data, I'd use Universal.

I have a question for you Randy
Are the loads listed in the chart the actual weights of the shot or the bushing used? Basically I want to know if everyone is loading Nice Shot by weight or volume
I loaded my test batch of Nice Shot with the scale and my second batch I manually added 10 #5's to each shell before I dumped through the 1oz bushing. I ordered a 1-1/16oz bushing but I think it will drop heavy

Randy-
Do you have any experience loading Nice Shot in older SxS's? I have a 1920 mfg Fox Sterlingworth 12ga in pretty good condition I would like to duck hunt with on the nice days.
Hoping for a 1oz to 1/16oz around 1150-1200fps but worried about pressure levels in the old girl. I see RST has them pre loaded, but I would like to roll my own here.
Thank you for your time and all the data you post here, you are an excellent asset to this forum and board!!
Dave

No, Dave, I don't-- most of my older shotguns have humps and hold five shots. Dan from Nice Shot himself is a vintage doubles fan. The folks over at http://www.foxcollectors.com/ah_fox/content/ would know more. SAAMI was founded in 1926 so a 1920 nitro proof standard in the U.S. didn't exist, it was up to the individual manufacturers. But nitro proofs were around long before that; since 1904 at the London Proof house to cite one example. Gun standards varied back then, see http://www.doublegunshop.com/gunther1.htm. So, there are better folks to ask than me, but it is easy enough to load Nice Shot to duplicate lead loads. You just need a credible assessment of your individual guns condition and reputable guidance as to reasonable maximum average pressures. My understanding is that 8000 PSI is a reasonable realm for fluid steel or other primitive steel barrels, but you should confirm that with someone far more familiar with old doubles than I am.

dnj21 If you have a favorite load that you use, call Precision Reloading and talk to Trent Or Keith and see what the actual pressure is using Nice Shot as the payload. Regards, Dan

Are any of these loads appropriate for use on Canadian geese? I think the goose shells that are loaded have a 1 3/8 oz payload

There are 1-1/4, 1-3/8, and 1-1/2 oz. loads listed.

Sorry about the newbie goose hunting questions but are the 1 1/4 loads appropriate or should I stick with 1 3/8 loads?

Well here is what a 1-1/8 ounce load of #4 Nice Shot out of my 16ga can do!
