I'm low on #5 but have quite a few boxes of #6. I'm assuming I will be completely fine since #6 works great for mixed bag quail/pheasant.. Just wanting to hear experiences from others on big mallards.

#6 steel is a little light (IMO), and #6 lead is illegal for ducks.

Good grief-- you're in the "Nice Shot" forum.

The NICE SHOT Story
Being unsatisfied with current choices of store bought and reloaded shot, came the idea to make a better, more pliable shot that does not harm shotguns. The result is a non-toxic shot that is as heavy as lead and almost as soft. It is made to be used as a lead replacement. Loading this shot does not require special wads, unlike other non-toxic options.

The shot has passed every environmental test along the path to final approval.

As of February 27, 2006 the shot was APPROVED by the USFWS!!!!!!!!!!
Patented as of September 28, 2010

Sorry, the post just came up on the "View new posts" thingy and I didn't even see the forum name! Mea Culpa !! As is obvious, I don't know the first thing about "nice shot". Please forgive my unintentional interference and continue your discussion. Maybe even an old goat like me can learn a little something.

Like you, I prefer generally prefer 5s (4s for pheasant) . . . but over decoys suggests moderate ranges, so no issue. For all practical purposes, it is a lead replacement as far as shot size per application.

That is my 16ga O/U in the picture, My favorite load for mallards is 1-1/8 of #6 Nice Shot.
1st barrel mod, 2nd full, nothing special but you have to remember that with a good pattern you are getting a much higher pellet count on the bird and hit it like a tennis racket.

#6 Nice Shot will be an excellent choice inside 45 yards, not my opinion, just experience.

Dan

Wow, you are going to listen to some crazy person using a 16ga, over/under to boot to hunt ducks?
Obviously has a screw loose somewhere.

Lead #6 worked like a champ over decoys in the old days. There's no reason why Nice Shot wouldn't do the same today.

Here is what 1 oz of #6 at 35 yards did this past Wed. Is was early and hard to see colors so unfortunately is was a hen, but the damage was significant. There were at least 3 hits in the head and both eyes were bulging out. This was at 35 yards out of a mod choke in a 1940 16 ga Marlin 90 DT OU. I'd say #6s are effective!

Is this with steel or a different non-toxic shot?
