I've inherited my grandfathers browning shotgun. It is a browning 16 gauge. I believe it is an A5, but I am confused in my research. The serial number is on the left instead of the right and is A 14726. The barrel shows "browning arms company St. Louis Mo.". In searching I'm unable to date this weapon, and need some help. It is in very good condition for a gun who has seen some action. It also has a Lyman cutter choke attached. Can you date it and give some history, and an approximate value.

Sounds like you have what is called the American Browning made by Remington during WWII days. Serial numbers on FN manufactured Auto 5s are on the bottom of the gun while the Remington made guns are on the left side. Serial numbers beginning with A are 16 ga, B is 12 gauge and C is 20 gauge. The barrels will have as you stated but will not have "Made in Belgium" and the gun will not have various Belgian proof marks.

Thanks for the reply Albany. Is there any way to find out the exact date of manufacture? Also, what would be a reasonable range of value for this A 5?

I can't date it and as I researched it, your serial number is not in the range of serial numbers used by Remington. Can you give more information and pictures?
