I have an oppurtunity to buy a Simson o/u at about 95% condition
At a very reasonable price - much less than what some people would say is the
"same gun but called a Merkel"
How much truth is there really to the Simson being the equal of a Merkel?
Could it be compared to an FN Superposed being the same, without the word Browning stamped on it?
Thank you

It depends on what model Simson it is. Some of the Simson O/U produced were a lesser quality gun like this one that came in 2-3 different models and levels of finish/engraving.

The Simsons that look exactly like the Merkels came off the same production line and are probably identical. Simsons are a great deal....if you want the quality and not looking to flash the name, they are the smart buy.

It is a trap or skeet model of the same type I posted. These guns sell used in good condition for about $6-800 in Germany. I don't believe they were imported to this country. This model is the lower end of the O/U Merkel/Simson line. They tended to be a little heavy/bulky but very serviceable. As a competition gun, may have high miles on it...check it out carefully.

Back in the days before German reunification in 1990, the gun works in Suhl (then a part of East Germany) produced Merkel, Simson and a couple other "names" of guns all in the same factory with the same workers working to the same design. In fact, if you look at the catalogs from Merkel or Simson in those days, on the one page it will show the one name and on the facing page it will show the other, both describing the same gun. The only difference was the name they stamped on it.

The only diffrence between this gun and a Merkel 47L is the name...this is a Simson boxlock, non ejector with engraving and better wood.... anyone want to take a guess what the same gun as a Merkel would sell for? I'm asking $1600 for this one but if you have a Merkel just as nice, I'll trade you even

When compared to Merkel of similar vintage the Simson vertical guns tend to be more ugly.
