So I've been eyeing on of the new CZ Bobwhite shotguns and have seen a few of the original-generation Bobwhites around. I know the new G2's have CNC'd receivers and coil springs which I definitely like. Is there any advantages to the original Bobwhite vs the new G2's? I kinda like the look of the case-coloring on the original but since this will be a field gun, the durability of the black chrome should be an advantage.

I agree, the coil springs are a definite improvement. Leaf springs, however, properly made, will often last a couple lifetimes on a hunting gun. Springs seem to have been Huglu's Achilles heel. I have had two, a DeHann SO & an old model Bobwhite. Both guns broke springs but both have given excellent service after being properly repaired. The SO has digested many Hevi Shot reloads & the Bob White has not been subject to as much abuse for not nearly as long but I feel confident relying on either of them. Coil springs are more durable but not invincible. What I like about the old model is the cross bolt lock up! It is a stronger action but how much that extra strength is needed on a bird gun shooting lite (relatively) bird loads is questionable. The Purdy double underlug lock up is pretty strong & some double rifles use it without a 3rd. bite. The old model Bob White has both. My Merkel model 47 sle has both & was quite a bit more expensive than the Bob White. My Ugartechea 10 ga. has the Purdy system but no cross bolt. It has survived a lot of pounding intact. I have lightened up on my 10 ga. loads in recent years as the 10's perform very well with a mere 1.5 to 1 5/8 oz. load of Bismuth or tungsten alloy & the Uggie gets the lightest loads because it is the lightest gun. The DeHann has killed ducks & geese at incredible ranges with 1 1/4 oz. of #4 & 5 Hevi Shot. There is no reason the G2 Bob White will not provide many years of trouble free service, that I am aware of provided it is not overly abused. I have been thinking of getting one in 16 ga, however, my old model 20 ga. is not for sale!
