My LGS just received a shipment of the new A400 Xcel Sporting Black shotgun that was released at the shot show. Priced at $1825. Anybody have any opinions on them yet? Thanks

$1825 for a semi? No thanks. Sounds overpriced. You can do the same thing with a pre owned 391 for $800.

From what I have read not a lot of extra bang for the buck over the smurf gun.

No way that gun worth the extra over the blue gun, no way in hell, in heaven, on earth. Black is standard for Beretta for many years, why the extra cost for black now ? $ 65 bolt closer ? Who needs an oversize bolt handle on their clays gun ?

If the Beretta A400 Xcel is going to fail because they decided blue is the color then so be it, vote with the wallet and say no to the extra $$$ black gun.

Right that doesn't have the new rotating bolt head, or kick off, or Optima HP chokes. I'm not arguing that the 391 isn't a great gun, however the A400 line is a great bang for the buck. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

I guess if that new stuff is worth $1000 to you go for it.

I'll take the Blue Smurf gun for $300 less! Better looking too!

I also call it a "Smurf" gun, but in actulity, I was told it was blue because Beretta's main color is blue. COuld they have made it more of a navy??????

B ut to the black version - $65 for a bolt closer - go look at Briley, right about the same price. I DID add the extended bolt release, saves the thumb, and a few extra mag cap weights to mine - makes it right at 8# on a postal scale. IMO, no need for an extended charging handle unless you are running 3-gun stuff

It has a carbon fiber rib that is supposed to be 4oz lighter than the normal rib. Then if you look at the endcap it appears they are using the 3.7oz medium weight endcap. So it ends up being about equal to the blue gun but more expensive and exclusive.
And you know some people will not care about the bolt closer/carbon rib/extended handle and simply pay the additional $300 just cause it's not smurf blue.

This is exactly spot on, for the guys that can't handle the blue, or don't feel like buying a blue one then paying the money to get the color changed.

I think the blue is a home run, but that's just my opinion.

I agree the black shouldn't make the price difference, but I was wanting to purchase an Excel sporting also, but didn't because of the blue. The only reason was because I probably would carry it wings hooting from time to time, and didn't want the color. There are a few out there offering to cerakote the blue smurf gun. But after the cost of the coating process, the price would be more than $300 difference. I'm kind of interested in the black myself with the kick off. I do like the looks of the gun. If it shoots anything like the smurf gun, and it supposed to, it's a Great shooter!!!! Maybe they will back off the price if it doesn't take off very quick.

clawhand check out coles gunsmithing. It looks like you can get the black coated standard xcel for $100 more than they have the blue for.

if you do get one, you won't be disappointed, great gun, and with the 3 inch chamber you certainly can do some wing shooting with it, I would hesitate to take my blue one out dove hunting.

Ditto getting a nice used AL391 for $800. I did that last summer and love the gun.

I borrowed a buddies blue xcel and shot a couple sporting clays - seemed really light to me with the standard blue cap. That would probably be my first fix.

I reallllly liked how the gun pointed and cycled though. I've been shooting 1100's since I was 13, and since then I have mixed in a few 390s/391s. The action on the A400 is noticeably quick. That second shot is there and ready when you need it - so black edition, blue edition, multi-target, or even the other models are good in my book!

Did you buy a blue smurf A400 of the black tricked out version? Keep us posted and let us know what you think!

Yep, the only difference in it and the "Smurf" gun is the items you mentioned and the color. I have been looking at one for awhile but I like blue so they may call me "Papa Smurf" at the club.
