I am getting interested in a 10 gauge shotgun. Just wondering what is out there other that the NEF single shot and the more expensive semi autos. I have been searching lots but haven't found much. Thanks for any help.

There used to be a couple of European 10ga O/Us around. Here is my Armi San Marco 10ga. I've had it for about 25yrs. I don't know if they are available much now.

Yes, it's 3-1/2". It was the only gun I had to shoot steel out of until last year. It weighs 9+lbs, so it soaks up some recoil, but it's still pretty stout. Steel loads (1-5/8oz) aren't too bad - the old 12ga 3" mags had a heavier payload. But, when I first got it we could still shoot lead in most areas, so I had to try the old 2-1/4oz Win XX Mags on the geese. You didn't want to shoot too many at one sitting. They were a little like being in a car wreck.

It's been a good old gun - she's killed a pile of ducks and geese. My hunting partners named her "Bertha". She spent 3 days on the bottom of the Illinois River a few years ago - cleaned the mud out of her, dried her out, and she was good to go.

IL - Bertha is definitely a keeper. My Dad ran commercial blinds on the Missouri about 50 years ago. He had a SXS from Spain called a DuBois, 34 inch barrels, 3 1/2 inch chambers - a real beast that he always kept in the blind for the high flyers. It had double triggers and I don't know what it weighed, but it was a real hand full. One day my cousin picked it up in a flurry of activity and somehow fired both barrels at once. Knocked him clean out of the blind. I remember when I was a little kid I thought the shells looked like roman candels!! Yup, it was a gun that could not be shot too many times in a row. It would give you a headache real quick!

Tal, That is a beauty!

Seeking, back in the early 1960's alot of Spanish 10ga SxS guns were imported to the US. Many were made in Eibar,Spain.Even Sears and Wards carried them(AYA Matadors). The quality on most of these guns was not the best but they were functional guns. Zabala made some higher grades in that time period. The run of the mill Spanish SxS of that time are going for $350 to $500. They were not made for steel shot but Bismuth works as well as lead did, some say better.

A Browning BPS pump is a solid gun made for steel with tubes(newer guns). I have seen them for $300 on the used market. Great gun if it fits you.

I used to have a 10 ga. o/u.I believe it was made by american arms if I remember correctly. It was a great gun. I sold it and purchased a benelli super black eagle.I wish I still had the 10 ga. o/u.It worked great for turkey hunting, super full in the top barrel, and improved cylinder in the bottom barrel. It had double triggers so when the turkeys were coming in I would have my finger on the front trigger for the super full barrel and once the turkey got to 25 yrds. I would switch to the back trigger for the improved cylinder.Man do I miss that gun!!

I have inherited a 10 ga Spanish sxs. I don't know much about it but I will be selling it. I can't find any info about it and that is why I was looking at this site. I will take a picture of it and try and post it. It looks pretty nice and it sure is heavy.
I live in Florida.

HELLO, I'M MAXX AND TODAY FRI 14, OCT. 2005 I'M GOING TO NEWINGTON, CT. TO PICK UP MY REMINGING SP-10. I'M 23 YRS. OF AGE AND THIS IS MY 1ST GUN I'VE EVER BOUGHT MYSELF. WHY A 10 GAUGE? WELL, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEIR RARITY. THEY'RE DIFFERENT THAN ALL THE OTHER TYPICAL SHOTGUNS OUT THERE. I MUST SAY THEY ARE QUITE UNIQUE.
THE ONLY DESIGNERS OF THE 10 GAUGE THAT I KNOW OF ARE BROWING WHICH ARE MOSTLY CAMOFLAUGE AND 1 WITH THE WOODEN STOCK. THE OTHER OF COURSE IS REMINGTON SP-10 WHICH COME IN EITHER CAMOFLAUGE, WOODEN STOCK, OR LIKE MINE ALL BLACK WITH SYNTHETIC STOCK. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU CHOOSE ONE.

SINCERELY,
MAXX DIRE.[/b]

A5guy is right...if it fits you...
I have had friends buy BPS10s that did not fit them and they ended up hating the gun and selling it. I have owned three BPS10s and they are good guns to start with because it's not such a big jump in weight from the 12ga you are used to. I also own a Browning Gold 10 Lite and a SP10 Rem. The Gold10 Lite is the same weight as the BPS10 but it will cost you twice as much. The nicest O/U 10ga that I have seen and shot is the Richland Arms O/U. The recoil is too stout for me, even using it for hunting situations only.
The best way to go is with the Gold10 Lite and if you are on a budget, go with the BPS10. The BPS is a wonderful gun...if it fits ya!

Tal,

Whats the story about your Armi spending 3 days at the bottom of the river??

Sounds like a good one. :)

I have a Browning BPS 10 ga. i picked up for $305. I looked for about 6 months. I noticed that most used 10 ga. are in very good condition, mint even. I figured it was because they were never taken out much.

I have never hunted with it yet, just patterned it.

MOD choke with Heavy Shot #6
I/C choke with Heavy Shot #2

These are the best patterns I came up with after trying 6 different types of ammo with these two chokes.

How can you go wrong with the Browning BPS 10 gauge Stalker?

Can you believe that Sportsmans Warehouse in OKC had the 10 gauge Stalker on sale a few months ago for $439 bucks? My buddy has one, and it kicks the pi$$ out of you...he loves it though. He also got, before last waterfowl season started, a Remington SP-10, and it is really soft shooting. 10's for geese are the ticket.

The Rem Sp-10 is the most popular around here. I finally got my hands on one last season. It won't belt you like most. Feels more like a 8lbs 12ga with a 2 3/4 heavy field load than the brute 10ga due to the gas operation and it's total weight. I carried it in some absurd weather this year. I was out in temps -10 hunting to bitterly cold freezing rain. Not a lick of problems. Never a failure to fire or operate.
Down side for many is the weight. Yeah it isn't an ultra lite, but it isn't like it is going to kill you carrying it for a while. The sling is your friend. It isn't the worlds fastest thing to load. An 11-87 is faster, but fumbling with the artillery rounds isn't as easy also. It's only real fault is the weak design of the front sling swivel. It has a rinky dink little clip holding it on. Have the gunsmith thread it and put a nut on it with loctite. Problem solved. All and all it is the ultimate in 10ga performance. As far as cost there is a couple times a year they seem to be found used for a reasonable cost. I paid $750 for mine. I was lucky. I got mine late season prior to the end of goose season. Normally you don't see them here on the market then yet. But after the fall hunts through the winter you might see a few. Just before spring turkey they are for sale and being snatched up like wild fire. In the summer I never see much of any and in the early fall they reappear briefly for sale prior to fall turkey and the start of goose season.
