I've been using the standard trap load (3 dr. eq., 1-1/8 oz., 7-1/2 shot), but I want to try a lighter load by dropping the shot charge to 1 oz. I'm not a reloader, so I'm looking at commercial loads. The problem is that many list velocity instead of dram equivalent. What is the highest velocity of 1 oz. of shot that's legal for trap? Thanks!

Tom

1325 fps is the highest for 1 ounce, 1290 for 1 1/8 and 1350 for 7/8. There are quite a few good one ouncers out there, just not kept by alot of places.

The best 1 ounce I ever put thru a gun was Winchesters 28 gram International shell, but they quit making it several years ago.

FITASC will be 1 ounce as of 2005, so expect more to be available, it wouldn't surprise me if NSCA didn't follow suit in the near future.

Winchester and Rem both make a 1235 fps one ounce, rated at 3 dram, RIO and the other cheaper shells have some at 1180 and are very soft, but don't cycle autos reliably.

Estates has a 1oz @1180fps 12ga. It works my Beretta 391 just fine.

A high velocity 1oz load is going to have plenty of recoil too and you don't need high velocity to break trap targets. My 1 oz reloads are 1175 and I have used them both from the 16 as well as long handicap and doubles with success. Sounds like the Estates would be a good one to try and it should surely cycle most autoloaders

A legal trap load is -

1 1/8 oz @ 1290 fps or 1 oz @ 1325 fps or 7/8 oz @ 1350 fps

These are maximums along with 12 ga and 7 1/2 shot - again maximums

You guys are lucky :)
In this neck of the woods for trap (16yd) max allowed
is 1oz. Most shoot 1290 commercial loads. We have a new Winchester load here 1290 1oz XTR which is 6% antimony.
I 1/8 0z is allowed for trap handicap and SC.
BTW we all shoot U/O guns as autos and pumps are banned
by courtesy of our dumb prime minister.
Quality shells may to be a bit cheaper here - about AUS $130.00 per case (500) or US$93.00 - I dunno!!
We also see a lot of imports from Europe and GB of pretty good
quality at the same price.

Thanks! This is great information. Incidentally, where can you find specs like these? I looked on the ATA web site and couldn't locate such stuff, and I have an old copy of the rules, which was no help.

Under what rationale did your "dumb prime minister" ban the use of pumps and autos?

It still amazes me how citizens allow their elected 'leaders' to take away their unalienable rights.

Oh. That's right. Australia doesn't have a 2nd Amendment.

It's kind of like how a beaver cuts down a huge tree...

Little bites that by themselves are insignificant, but as the picture develops, it's a patient way to accomplish a huge task and the tree falls. And usually it falls the way a beaver wants it to.

Chips are being bitten from our 2nd Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

By voting we can control the beaver bites. Otherwise our tree is already marked for the direction of its fall.
