My daughter has expressed interest in learning how to shoot clays. What type of shot gun would be good for a medium build 19 year old?

What are you willing to spend? Pump, auto, or O/U?

One that fits.......

Please define "clays"; there are too many variables in that name alone

Suggestion:

Read this thread; it will help you find the best gun for her.

One that fits for sure. Just because a gun is designed for a woman doesn't mean it will fit every woman. My wife shoot an A400 and it fits, the womans gun was to small. So depending on your daughters stature will depend on fit. My vote is for an auto.
Find yourself a few accomplished women shooters at your club and introduce your daughter to them. I bet they would be more than happy to introduce her to the sport. If she picks up the sport be prepared for some competition and she will undoubtedly surpass your best scores.
Congratulations!

When starting a new shooter out, I feel there are a couple of goals you want to achieve

First, you want to create a scenario where they can have some quick success so they do not become frustrated. For this reason I recommend you do not consider a .410. It is really a gun for experienced shooters who are looking for a new challenge.

New shooters are not used to recoil. To further exacerbate the issue they are also learning how to properly mount and hold the gun and proper stance. So reducing recoil/Perceived recoil so that it is not a factor in deterring their interest in the sport is also very important. For this reason I suggest you get a 20 gauge gas operated semi-auto (or 28 gauge if you reload/can afford the ammo). Do not look for the lightest gun, as a lighter gun has more recoil. You want her to shoot the heaviest gun that she can comfortably shoot well.

A 12 gauge is not out of the question, and in all likelihood, if she remains interested in clays she will want to graduate to one, I just think the benefits of less recoil in the smaller gauges is a real benefit for a starting shooter. Later on she will have a better stance & gun mount, and be better able to control recoil.

Though you said "medium build" in your original post, just think how many nice presents you can buy her if a full size gun fits her and then you can borrow them. {hs#

Wish I was still young enough to still have a 19 year old daughter.
