Hi guys.
Currently I have a approx. 15 year old 11-87 Special Purpose.
I use it for hunting Geese, ptarmigans (small bird) and black bird (midsize bird, long range), I use 2 3/4" and 3" shells. I am a left hander.
I want to try something else now since my 11-87 is getting a bit old.
It seems like shotguns are getting lighter, less recoil, better techcnology etc.
What is the reliability like today, what shotguns are worth looking out for.
What I am mainly after is low weight and high reliability.

The local store stocks Winchester, Remington, Benelli, Beretta,Browning, Bettinsoli, Baikal, Breda and Marocchi.
I am set on the Benelli, Winchester, Beretta or Browning.
It would be nice to have some info on this issue, and also if you guys know of a good comparism review on those makes.

Thanks
Eirikur

Welcome to Shotgunworld, you will probably like it here, lots of good info and helpful shotgunners. The merits of the guns you have mentioned have been hashed out on numerous threads here on SGW many times - browse around the "I Like My...." section and you can read fans (and detractors) of the various brands and models discuss their merits and weaknesses. Also check out the Opinion forum up top. My opinion on the four brands you have mentioned is that they are all premium brands, make very good products (barring the occasional gun with an issue) and would represent equal value. I would try to handle each and see what I liked or disliked about each and then choose the one I liked the best. I have hunting buddies who own everything you have listed (Browning Maxus and Gold - Winchester Super-X M2 and M3 - Benelli SBE, SBE II, M-1 Super 90, and M-2 - Beretta Urika-II and Extrema-II). I myself own a Benelli M-2 and like it just fine, but my buddies that own the other guns swear by them as well. No bad choices on your list.

Ps Realizing that you are a lefty will limit your choices, not being left-handed I don't pay attention to what is and isn't available in left-handed versions.

Thank you Old Hunter for your greetings, and your tips.

@ Oddgauge .... Thanks for the tip on Brownings, I will see what is available in the used market here.

I am located inIceland and the laws are probably different here than in USA.
What I mean by Black birds are the following species:
1. Alca torda (http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%81lka).
2. Uria aalge (http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langv%C3%ADa).
3. Uria lomvia (http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuttnefja).
4. Cepphus grylle (http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teista).
5. Fratercula arctica (http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lundi).

Not sure what you referring to when you say "black bird" but black birds are protected under the MBTA.

Stick to the Brownings, you will be okay, me I would go buy an older Browning A-5.

This thread seemed pretty close to what I'd like to hear about.

I'm usually a defensive/tactical forum reader but would like to get an entry level O/U for hunting this fall and "fun skeet" with guys in the neighborhood. I would really like to buy a gun made in the US if there are any affordable O/U's still made here. I've looked at Mossberg Silver & Onyx Reserves in the store but recently learned they're made overseas.

My previous hunting & clay experience is with three Mossberg 500's and an 1187. I shot a box through my brother in law's Italian made O/U and was hooked but that gun is way out of my price range. I can probably spend about $600. I'd welcome any recommendations.

Thanks
