Dad introduced me to small game hunting with a Stevens 311, in 12 Gauge, many years ago, the list in between is long, but i will end with my Merkel. I've since those early days, have acquired a love for pointing dogs and Upland game birds; my gun of choice is a Merkel model 8 in 20 Gauge, she has Brily chokes, Churchill 25" barrels, handles like a dream and has the image of the my pointer painted on the stock so we can always hunt together.

I've never owned that many shotguns. I started out with an H&R 16 ga single barrel. Went to a 16 ga Stevens 77F that I used for many years, then to a 12 ga Ithaca 37. What I use today:

Stevens 77F - 16 ga
Ithaca 37 - 12 ga
Ithaca 37 - 16 ga
Ithaca 37 - 20 ga
Remington Model 17 - 20 ga.
Mossberg 500 - 20 ga.
Benelli Montefeltro - 12 ga.

My main squirrel-hunting shotgun through the years has been an early-1950s Stevens 311 with 30-inch barrels . I noticed a few years ago the stock now has a small crack where it meets the receiver. I guess 62 years and countless loads of 1 1/4 ounce hi-brass shells will do that to you.

So a couple of years ago I bought a replacement to take some of the load off my old double. It's a Mossberg 500 "Turkey Thug" with a 24-inch barrel and a XXF choke. This is now my main squirrel gun. When the leaves are still heavy in the trees, I screw on a PolyChoke II for those shots ranging from 10 yards to way out there. The PolyChoke is even more versatile than the two chokes in the barrels of my ole 311, and it is exceptionally effective. When the leaves fall off the trees and almost all shots are way out there, I put the tight XXF turkey choke on, which cannot be beat for long-range results.

I used a 20ga 870 Wingmaster for about my 25 years of hunting, and still did for deer up to last season when WI opened most of the state to rifle.

I bought a 20ga 686 O/U and used that for all my pheasant and quail hunting until 5yrs ago when I got a dedicated quail gun - a 28ga Renato Gamba SxS.

I use the 20ga for ducks and pheasants and the 28ga for quail and grouse.

Ducks in timber: Beretta AL390 Silver Mallard 12ga
Ducks over flooded fields: Win Super X3 12ga
Squirrel (AKA Skurl): Savage94 .410
Rabbit: Win M12 28ga or 870 Wingmaster 20ga
Quail: 870 Wingmaster 16ga
Dove: Beretta 686 28ga or 870 wingmaster 12ga
Turkey: Browning A5 Mag 12ga or Super X3

Have to say that no matter the game I have a tendency to grab my 870 Wingmaster 16ga. It's just an old 1955AP with a plain 28" Mod barrel with plain stock and corn cobb forearm but it's so perfect it makes you feel like you can't miss. I probably have bagged more small game with it than anything.

Yea that. I hunt rabbits, quail, & dove with my Ithaca Model 37 12ga. It has a 28 inch modified barrel. I absolutely love this shotgun! I rarely miss with it.

It depends what u are more comfortable with and what your budget is i just bought a mossberg maverick 88 with a 28" barrel for 140 and it shoots fine i have no complaints but if u have a little more money to spend a mossberg 500 is good to its basicly the suped up version of the mossberg 88.

Current shotguns are a Beretta PB409 SxS and an old fasti style SxS. Both are used mostly for fox whistling. Previous owned shotguns in order are a handed down PB409, Stirling(Armscor) 5 shot pump and a Beretta A300. I no longer have the pump or the A300 as 20 years back they were banned for the public.

I keep an old NEF single shot 20g in the truck behind the seat (Single cab truck) for small game as I live in Michigan's U.P. and am surrounded by national forest.I If I am soley out on a hunt for the day I use my Beretta 686 silver essential 12g for upland, turkey, and waterfowl. These 2 guns are all I need for small game. In the past 40+ years I've used singles,s x s, pumps, autoloaders, and have found the Beretta by far my best game getter.
