OK, I do have the dog(no Bird) engraved on the side. Looks like the 3 Pin Lock Plate on that site.

If there is no 'F' before the SN, the gun was made prior to Baker Gun & Forging selling their gun business to H.& D. Folsom in 1919.

Can you ID these by the Serial Number? There is no letters what so ever in the serial number, just 3871..

No. If it's a dog without the bird, it should be a B and would have "damascus twist" barrels R would have crolle damascus or Fluid Steel barrels

Here are a few pictures of it. Not the best light out in the garage. Could never get a not fuzzy picture of the top of the barrels. So I am looking at a R with Fluid Steel Barrels?

It appears to be a R. Are there any marks on the bottom of the barrels just forward of the flats? Krupp, LLH, or ACL in a circle?

The gun is not an R Grade. Wrong engraving, wrong barrel material, wrong serial no. range. It is a B Grade .

revdoc, the redone gun in question is from the A and B serial range and sports the specific A and B engraving. It is far from the R grade serial range of 200,000 plus or sometimes for a very few gun in the 39-46,000 range. If the gun in question actually has fluid steel barrels, the barrels are an aftermarket item. It may be possible twist steel barrels have been blued, too. The owner might provide a letter stamped on the forend lug on the barrels. Some guns are stamped there with a T or D or S.

This is from Hallquist's and Hardin's article in the 1997 Guns IllustratedPLEASE NOTE A and B production started in 1892, not 1897. The meaning of 'H' is uncertain, but could be "Homotensile" Steel
