Hullo everyone!

Though it's been five years since someone last posted in this thread I was wondering if anyone can provide me any insight on this 12ga Sauer that I picked up recently. I know very little about shotguns, but I'd love to learn!

Not an expert on Sauer's. You may want to look at: http://www.shotguns.se/html/east_germany.html

The 12-70 is 12 gauge with 2 3/4" chambers so modern shells would work. It is choked and Nitro proofed with modern powders. The 861 should mean August '61. The 'Sohn', not Son, indicates it wasn't made for US export which makes sense since Sulh was under communist control at that time.

The hole thru the rib extension means it has a Greener style cross bolt for lockup.

If you click on Sauer&Sohn on the menu at the top left of the linked page you should see pictures of some of their models. Maybe you could find yours (engraving varies). There is also a detailed history.

On post WWII Sauer examples(Suhl) the Modell designation is on the rear lug.

Hullo Everyone!

Sorry for the late reply, I thought I had clicked yes for post notifications!

So this is a lot newer than I thought, interesting! Does that mean there is a possibility that it can handle steel shot? Would getting the barrel thickness measure be enough to answer that question?

I'm looking to hunt geese, if it can't handle steel I guess I should go for bismuth?

Apologies again for my ignorance,
Nick

I am trying to estimate the value of a shotgun for my insurance. It is a 16 ga Sauer Sohn Suhl side by side with hammers serial number 71630. Where should I look?

So, resurrecting this old thread.....looking at one of these old 1910 Sauer sxs 16, ser # 156xxx. I'm certain based on above that it's 2-1/2 in chamber. I only see the crown U and Crown S which seems to me it's proofed for black powder. Are the 2-1/2 shells available from RST and I think RIO safe to shoot? I am asking in a general sense, presuming gunsmith confirms gun is in good condition, etc. Just concerned abut pressures if using modern shells since there is no nitro proof that I can see anywhere on the gun.

RST for sure typically labeled >>Lite<<. I typically shoot the Paper but on some tight chambered 16s, the cartridges stick slightly. But in 1910, there might be a >>Nitro<< stamps on the side sof the tubes.
