Local shop took in a 16 gauge 97, rougher than a cob but functions. Question, it is factory cyl bore. Never saw one before. What would be the purpose of a 16 cyl bore back then? (Sold in less than a day)

Are all 16 ga 26” barreled 97’s considered to be a “brush gun”, regardless of choke? I have a full choked one from 1918 that definitely shoots too tight for the brush.

October 16, 1897 Sporting Life 12g Brush 26" cylinder bore

July 23, 1898 Sporting Life

The 16g was introduced in 1899 with barrel length and choke as desired; November 25 Sporting Life

In the 1911 catalog the Brush was only offered in 12g
