Hello all!

I have been unable to identify a recently acquired single barrel 10 gauge. The serial number is 1245 and found on the barrel lug and the forearm metal where it joins the receiver. The number 1 is found on both receiver rails where the barrel engages. It has a Hopkins and Allen butt plate that looks like it is has been there a long a time and fits properly. There are no proofs marks or makers name on any part of the shotgun. The receiver is nicely case colored , the 10 gauge 30" barrel appears to be steel, has a well-done filed solid rib and is cylinder bore. Stock is finely checkered and the sort of Schnabel type fore end has a Deely/Greener lock and the fore end lock on the barrel is staked in a dove tail. There is a push down safety button just behind the hammer. Weight is just over 7 pounds...overall length is 46". Could not find any Hopkins & Allen that looked like this shotgun. Quality seems much better (no offense intended to H&A owners. Any ideas would be geatly appreciated!

.

Welcome to SGW ! ! {hs#

I've never seen any economy break-open single-shot shotgun with a raised rib or that thing-a-ma-jig behind the opening lever before.

The receiver doesn't look like the typical raised side panel H&A, but looks more like an Excelsior receiver.

You didn't post an image of the RH side of the receiver, but this is what an Excelsior RH view looks like:

Excelsior was a trade name used by Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle works and J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company (J. Stevens Arms company after July 1, 1916).

I hope this can help you somewhat with an ID, as I don't have any more clues.

The OP's gun is a H&A Safety Single. See below:
https://www.gunvaluesboard.com/can-you- ... 10991.html

A note on TRADE names:
House brand names were used by manufacturers (example - Stevens used Springfield and Riverside).
Trade names were used by sellers (hardware and department stores).

Well....that was quick! The link you provided showed a less fancy version of my shotgun.
It would be nice to know if H&A did indeed make a "deluxe" version...or my shotgun was an anomaly of sorts. Problem solved in an hour or so thanks to Shotgun World.

Looks like a Hopkins & Allen Safety Single Gun. Looks like it may have had some working over, as it is only shown in 12- and 16-gauge in their 1908 catalog --

That big mono-bloc breech certainly looks big enough to screw a 10-gauge barrel into! The Safety Single Gun is not in the 1914 H & A catalog.

H & A did offer a fancier, checkered and engraved, version of the Safety Single Gun in the 1908 catalog.

I don't believe the rib was a factory option. It was probably part of a "rework".
