I recently pick up a Beretta 686 oynx, 12 ga, 3 inch chamber,26.5 inch barrels, Mobil chokes,imp-full-mod. the gun is very clean, nice wood. box and all original paperwork were included with the sale.

I am having difficult time trying to understand all the different Beretta models {CR8

Yes, it IS hard to understand. Your 686 Onyx is essentially the same gun as the SP-1, but with a different "engraving" pattern. I assume your gun has a bright finish on the receiver, but I also owned a 686 Black Onyx model, which had a deeply blued receiver and a simple gold-filled "Beretta" on the side, with no other receiver engraving, and very nice wood. (A real classy looking gun!)

Welcome to SGW ! ! {hs#

It's difficult to distinguish all the players w/o a score card, since Beretta has made over 50 variations (686/687) of O/U's on the same action.

The best scorecard available to Joe The Plumber would be a current issue of the Blue Book of Gun Values (BBGV).

The various Onyx grade (Onyx, Black Onyx, White Onyx, Whitewing, etc, etc) guns were mostly reliable field grade guns.

I especially like my 20ga 686 Black Onyx 26" for rough upland hunting.

thanks for the warm welcome. I am trying to figure out how to post pics. After reading your post my gun is older flat blued gun with the simple gold inlay of P Beratta on side of the receiver.

Those 3.5” Versions were field guns. I would not want to shoot a 3.5” loads through an o/u, too much recoil. Stick with 2 3/4” loads.

The best thing to remember is that there was an article in Shooting Sportsman magazine by Mr. Cole, (a major Beretta dealer) explaining that concerning "68X" models, Beretta "Made the guns too good", and explaining exactly why. The reliability, ease of maintenance, etc. makes them really stand out.
