I've tried everything to find out when my A5 was manufactured but failed, the only thing I'm sure about is that it was before 1939.
Serial: 1113xx

Can anyone tell me more?

How about A82## 1940- 1946 sound right?

Belgium Sweet Sixteen X77509

I didn't see anything on the Browning site about an X in front of the number. Any ideas?

I haven't a clue. Checked again to make sure the X is there.
Thanks for your help.

Sounds like we're in the same boat, except mine doesn't have the N above the serial #.

Southgadog, Serial # R3916. You didn't specify if yours was a 16 or not, but R indicates a 'standard' 16 shipped ~Spring of 1954.

Seawolfxx, Belgium Sweet Sixteen X77509, Shipped, ~Fall of 1952.

Euratte, A82## My records indicate that gun was shipped Spring of 1958.

Those are all real nice production years for A5 16 gauge guns!

ropechoker, I don't see anything with a N above and X24341, I suggest posting Question on this site as a new topic.

I inherited a Browning Light Twelve from my wifes 88 year old uncle. It has a "G" above a serial number of 71266. It is a single barrel, appears to have a 5 shell chamber and a 28 1/2 inch barrel.
I know absolutely nothing about guns. Is this shotgun worth anything and what would be the best way to advertise it for sale if my wife agrees to let it go? Thanks for any assistance you may offer.
I tried to look it up at the suggested web site with information but I do not know what category to start with.

billco,

If I read the data file correctly it is a 1957 Light Weight.

1957 Serial Numbering System changed again. M=Standard Weight. G=Light Weight. M22000-M85000
G23001-85000

Did you look at the link to Browning??

I have an A5 and I can't decipher the date from the serial number. The serial number has an 8V with the number 3522 below it. The barrel has a Belgium stamp on it.

Any ideas when this was made?

Thanks,

:roll:

After consulting with Jeff Mull, I found that this gun was made in 1958 which happens to be the first year that the A5 magnums (which is what this gun is) were made.

Seems there are a lot of questions here on manufacture dates. Here is the Browning link to find the date of manufacture.

I've been reading this over and have been to the Browning site but still find this confusing. Help me out please. I have a Light Twelve 12 GA here's what I have

8G
97731

The 8G isn't on the same line with the sn. Does this make a difference? or is this gun a 1958 Light? Also on the barrel which I believe to be original to the gun, says....Browning Arms Co St. Louis Mo and on the other side it says Made in Belgium So what do I have? A pre WWII or a 1958?
Thanks,
Ken

<<<Directly from the browning site:
1958-67 From 1958 serial numbers were preceded by the date of manufacture. 8M=standard weight for 1958. 8G=light weight for 1958.
Example: 8M1000 = A 1958 Auto-5 standard weight shotgun with serial number 1000 G85001-G99000
8G1-8G2000
M=standard weight
G=light weight

YES, you have a 1958 light weight shotgun with a serial number of 97731

Ladies & Gents,

Here's an updated version of the link to Browning, I found the first one no longer exists.

Cheers,

i just bought ----> X78452 A5 standard 16ga.

1952? there is no X listed as a pre-fix on the site, but i saw the other gentlemens post that had an X77... number?

evidently, the X prefix in those years signified a 16 gauge?
