Hello everyone, I was making my rounds of various gunshops in the area today and ran across a gun in a pawn shop that I had never seen before. It was a remington pump with bottom eject in 20 ga it was in very good condition for a pawn shop gun and had been marked down to $299 or $250. After some research I believe it is a model 17. I am considering buying it as I love early guns and it is in very good condition for a gun of its age. So I was wondering what you guys could tell me about this gun the good and the bad. Are these fairly rare and what is a good price for one? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

The 17 is my favorite pump. It was designed by John Browning and is 20 ga. only which means that everything is scaled for the 20. Remington made 72,644 from 1921 thru 1937. The design was taken over by Ithaca after the patent expired and Remington stopped making them. They called it the model 37 and the rest is history. I have 5 of them including a F grade and a skeet model. I have paid from $100 to $500 but $200 to $300 should buy most of them.

My 2 brothers and I grew up shooting this gun. We wore it out - and that was from shooting thousands and thousands of shells through it. It was absolutely my favorite gun ever. It was stolen from my youngest brothers house in a break in. Wish I had it for the sentimental value.

My 17 is a first year gun. Smooth as butter, and works perfect.
26" full bbl. Standard was 28" it was also available in 30" and 32".
It is the same as a model 37 Ithaca but the parts will not interchange.
My gun was missing one of the carrier screws and it had to be made up as few parts are available.

researcher- I looked at the few catalogs I have this morning and you are right. There is no mention of a skeet choked barrel for the model 17. That said auto5 guy and I each have one. The barrel is marked skeet in fairly large lettering. There are no special markings on the receiver. My gun was made in Oct. 1925 by the barrel code. The barrel is 28" long and has a solid rib.

My gun is from 1927 and the barrel is clearly marked SKEET, like Remroc's gun. This gun was purchased by my uncle in about 1933 and I am guessing that it was a used gun at that time. It has a 26" plain barrel. Uncle Don was a great skeet shooter and won many tournaments after WWII. He mostly shot M31s with no ribs and Cutts Compensators. His 1951 12ga M31F Skeet is a real piece of work.
