Room to shorten 930 stock?

How much room is there to shorten a wooden 930 stock? If you take off the recoil pad, how much could you cut off before you reached the end of the spring assembly?

Thanks!

I looked at doing this a couple of years ago... I couln't get the search tool to work right, so, I'll try to repost from memory...

Once you remove the recoil pad and look in the back of the stock there is a large 3/4" nut & spacer that holds the stock on.

If you were to find a "thinner" nut and a smaller spacer, you could probably cut 1' to 1-1/2" from the stock, that's without modifying the recoil srping tube, if you want to cut the tube there's even more length to "loose". You would have to fit a recoil pad like a grindable limbsaver or such.

I was able to get an already shortened stock from a friend.

Next, I had to shorten the distal end of the recoil tube, the aluminum spacer (making sure it is still covers the recoil spring crosspin and the attachment nut .

I measured and then drilled holes on the buttplate.

I used a Brownell's universal plate that came closests to the final dimensions and then I had to grind a little to get the final fit. Remember to get the one without screwholes. 078-000-061 SMALL UNIV. BUTT PLATE NO HOLES, GLOSS.

The "gum" is modeling clay I used to prevent any of the reinforcement JB Weld from getting into the screw hole.

OK everyone just wanted to add my imput here as well. I want to thank the OP for helping me get the balls to go ahead and mod my 930 as well.

Like some of you here not everyone can use 14" of LOP.

Inspired by this info, I did a bit of research and found out that Mossberg has 2 different types of stocks.

The one that came with my 930 had no raised comb. So I went about looking for one that did. Eventually I found a used one on ebay !

I taped off the amount I wanted to remove and then chopped it with the table saw.

I also chopped off the excess threading of the recoil tube housing inside with a dremel. I cut off enough so the spring retaining pin was not cut off and also left enough thread to put the nut and stock nut spacer back.

The end result was a manageable 12.5 of LOP. You will note on the pics that I did not replace the rubber recoil pad. I did this because I use a padded tac vest when I do 3 gun hence I dont need the rubber cushion. BTW I just reused the rubber pad plate to cover the rear of the stock AND I also place skateboard tape on the back so as to provide a rough grippy surface during a rainy day.

As you can see I continued to mod the 930 after the stock change and got carried away ! Oh well its not like I have any other bad habits !

Here is the end result with a function test to make sure the 930 cycled reliably. Yea ! NO Issues !

I know this topic is pretty old but was looking to find out if there is any room to cut stock WITHOUT doing alterations ti the nut or spacer? I just ordered a 930 JM 24" so I dont have it hand yet

So I was looking to get some input on people that have them or have measured it. I was tryng not to cut off threading on tube to make room to shorten the stock

Instead I wanted to trim stock a minor amount then install a 1/2 recoil pad to trim maybe an 1" off of LOP
