Have you tried the usual suspects like Mossberg, GunBroker, etc?

I've purchased a barrel or two directly from Mossberg and that's what I'd suggest in your case.

That's quite a nice collection of 16 gauge guns, sir, so perhaps you already have lots of 16 gauge shells too, and perhaps that's why you want a Mossberg 500 16 gauge barrel to shorten for HD. I understand your problem because Mossberg 500B guns were only made from 1977 - 1983 with 26, 28, or 30 inch barrels. I could find no Mossberg 500 16 gauge guns or barrels on GunBroker or GunsAmerica or Havlins, or barrels on eBay, Brownells, Numrichs, Corsons Barrels or elsewhere. Nor could I find a Western Auto Revelation 310B or barrel anywhere. Havlins or MossbergOwners.com might advise you.

I suggest that you shorten your own Western Auto Revelation 310B. What do you think, sir?

Older thread, so PM sent.

I don't know where you got those dates but they're wrong. I own a 500 B pre 1968 GCA and in 1975-1976 I hunted with a friend who used his dads 500 B and it wasn't new.

I have one. Got it in 1967, 16 gauge, no serial number. 28" mod barrel and it cost $75. I still have it and take it out every now and then.

You are correct, bearman49709. I got the incorrect years of manufacture from http://gun-data.com/Mossberg_models_years.html. Quoting, "500L -- Same as 500 except 16 gauge, 26, 28, 30 inch barrel, etched receiver, checkered pistol grip stock. 1877 - 1983". I assumed the typo "1877" should have been 1977, but if it was a double typo it could be 1967.

Moreover, I overlooked "500L" where L = Mossberg designate for game scenes engraved upon receiver, as recently reported by Darryl, madtrapper143. Naturally one could expect that plainer 500B guns would have pre-dated fancier guns. I wish that I had old Mossberg catalogs.

22calmike also has a pre-1968 no serial number 500B. Does your gun have a single action bar, sir? And do you know where kennedy756 can buy a used 16 gauge barrel?

Mossberg 500 16 gauge barrels are scarce because Mossberg did not make the 500B for very long, so what were the years of manufacture?

A Mossberg catalog collection would be handy but expensive so I devised a work-around by using the content / index pages of the catalogs that Cornell Publications sells online, http://www.cornellpubs.com/old-guns/historic-mossberg.php.

Ricky Anderson wrote that he found out that Mossberg started manufacturing the 500B in 1962, while this_is_nascar researched and reported that the 500B was produced from 1963 - 1969. There were 1961, 1962, and 1963 Mossberg ads which only mention the 12 gauge 500. But a very early Owners Manual is for the 500A, 500B, and 500C guns.

A Mossberg 16 ga 500B known to have serial number 42189 was made in 1968, according to the chart above. I have been looking for Mossberg 500B serial numbers to date those ones made in 1968 and later.

The 1962, 1963, and 1965 catalogs are not available from Cornell, but the content page of the 1964 Component Parts Catalog mentions the 500B, as do the content pages of the 1967, 1968, and 1969 catalogs. No content page of later catalogs mention the 500B, but page 14 of the 1972 catalog reports the walnut stock and double action slide bars of the 500B and that it was available with 28" Full, 28" Modified, or 26" IC fixed choke barrels. A 1974 Mossberg ad mentions the 16 gauge. So an actual examination of later ads and catalogs might also find mention of the 500B.

Mossberg has e-mailed the owner of a Western Field 550B 16 gauge, "Sir your gun was manufactured on October 19, 1971." So the store branded versions of the 500B were produced to at least 1971. Can anyone verify production of the 500B or the store versions after 1974? Thanks.

We are glad that you found an already shortened barrel, sir. You chose to not use a 12 gauge for HD. Was your decision based on plenty of already stored 16 gauge shells?

I see only Federal and Aguila #1 buckshot online. Or you might still have the old Remington or Winchester loads. What are you using, or do you load your own shells?

I bought some federal from sportsmanguide, they were offering free shipping. I also have a 12 ga mossy set up for HD. I looked into reloading buckshot, but would have had to buy different wads, powder, plus the buckshot, making the cost too high for just a few rounds.
