Couple of months ago I'm duck hunting with my 930 waterfowl gun pull up to shoot and click. Nothing. It also happened a few times during dove season. I did some research and cleaned the gun up really good including cleaning the pistons all up which I had never done before as I didn't even know about them. This past weekend I'm out hunting again. First flock 3 shots go off no problem. I'm a happy man. Next flock get 1 shot off and gun doesn't cycle. I'm not happy! It was about 15 to 16 degrees so I'm wondering if it got cold or if I didn't fix the original problem. I don't trust the reliability of this gun and I'm about to give up on it.

I don't mean to sound condescending or mean but I don't think you have a gun problem. I do suspect you have an owner problem. Since you stated you didn't know anything about the piston at first, I believe you need to find someone who owns a gas gun to teach you everything about cleaning and proper lubing.

I would not get rid of the gun. They are very reliable. I have one.

Again, I really don't want to sound like a dick, but have you studied the owner's manual?

The problem could be due to a lot of things. Ammo, heavy lubricant, bulky clothing, not holding the gun firmly to your shoulder, partially clogged gas ports, dirty recoil spring in buttstock, etc. Did you remove the bolt assembly and trigger assembly and soak both in solvent after you bought the gun?

The 930's are good guns. Yours probably just needs a "good" cleaning and proper lubrication along with suitable ammo. Good luck. Keep us posted. If you have any specific questions, let us know. Someone here will likely have a good answer.

Is Hoppe 9 a good cleaner to use on the pistons?

Yeah, pretty good, but I like Mineral Spirits (aka Paint Thinner) better. It's available at any hardware store or Lowes or similar place.

However, to really clean the gun well and remove the rust preventative that most gun manufacturers (and probably Mossberg) put on the insides, you need to remove the bolt assembly and trigger assembly from the receiver. Look for some videos on You Tube to show you how to do this. If you have any questions, let us know.

I have removed the bolt and trigger assembly plenty of times. The piston assembly moves quite easily so I really think that part is pretty clean. I did find some fouling on the inside of the magazine where the carriage slides so I cleaned that up.

Might clean the gas ports. Solvent and pipe cleaners work. Just an idea.

Last 3 days 3 limits of geese and no problems. I think it froze up the time I was out when it was real cold.
