Hello. Have followed this site for years and appreciate the wealth of information that people are willing to share. Now I have a question that I cannot find an answer to. A fellow is offering to trade or sell what seems to be a field model Ithaca 37 that is parkerized (maybe considered matte?) It has a 28" barrel, a plain receiver and furniture similar to military/riot models. Does anyone know if this configuration was ever offered from the factory? Thank you.

Any idea as to the year it was made?
Have seen some Model 87s that were made like that (have one).
And it would not be too hard to take a 18" barrel riot gun and add a 28" parkerized barrel.
Depending on price I would buy it, no problem.

Thanks for the response. I will confirm and get back but I believe the serial number put it in the 70's. I'll check. Thanks.

.

The Ithaca 37 shotguns issued to us in/for Vietnam were all parkerized, IIRC - as were the M-37 riot guns sold to law enforcement.

IDK if the war guns were factory parkerized or done by some military armory after delivery - and after 50+ years cannot recall the barrel length, either.

FWIW, over the years, the more "stuff" I pack into my brain, the faster the older "stuff" gets trashed.

Need a serial number or at least a year of manufacture. At one point Ithaca had really skimped on finish in an attempt to compete with the 870 Express. This would of been '80s era as I recall.

Not ignoring you guys. Trying to reach the gentleman and get the serial number. Thanks again for taking interest.

Absolutely!

I own one. Mine came with 2 barrels. A vent rib, choke tubed field barrel and a slug barrel. The wood was birch if I remember correctly. If I don't remember correctly, it doesn't matter, the wood was crap and I took it off and replaced it with a wood laminate stock and foreend.

Mine has no engraving and is a 3" chambered model.

In fact, if you look carefully, you will see 2 configured that way, ie: parkerized, no engraving.

Great pics. So, did your park version come with the ringed forearm?

Ok. Then the configuration I described in my original post was factory? If so, that is my answer. The gun I am looking at looks to be original. Still haven't heard from the guy but I remember the serial number being from the 70's. Does that sound correct to you.? Thanks for responding.

Yes, they came from the factory this way. My brother has one my dad got him when he was a kid. It was a combo package. Vent rib mod barrel and a Deerslayer barrel. All parkerized. Just a plain oil finished wood. Ring tail fore end and no checkering. Late 70's into the 80's.

Mystery solved! Wonder why there isn't much info on the model? Maybe I just didn't look in the right places. I did find an old ad that seemed to fit the description. Oh well, I am a fan of the 37 and have owned a couple over the years. I believe I will cut a deal with this guy. Thank you for contributing. I'll check back when I have it in hand.

Start buying old catalogs. Also Walt's 37 book if you don't have a copy.

Best info out there.

I will look for a copy. I like things that are different. I know it's plain but you don't see them as often. It has a spot waiting next to my newest additions. 1929 Auto 5 with solid rib and a clean 1959 Wingmaster. It will be a while before I can pick it up. He lives in another state. Maybe I can get a friend to send some pics. Thanks again for your interest and responses

A fellow at a local gun shop had a parkerized sporting barrel, looked just like my M & P. I was going to buy it but never did

Glad to see someone is keeping this alive. I think IthacaMatt answered my question. It will be a couple of weeks until I have the gun. The guy is in another state. Looking forward to posting some pics. Another question... anyone know the approximate production numbers for the park versions? I see them online but don't see them in the shops. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention but I don't miss many old shotguns.

Well you could ask Walt if he has any left. If he doesn't see this post, create one. OR
