Just picked up a new version of the Ruger "fake gun magazine" catalog at the LGS. The new catalog has an SR9 and LCP on the cover. Under the photo of the GL in the catalog section is this note: "Current models sold out, redesigned models anticipated in 2009"

The catalog from earlier this year stated: "Current models sold out, redesigned models available summer 2008"

If you believe what Ruger printed in this catalog, I have Santa's direct hotline so you can get a Gold Label for free!

You've got a better chance of catching the Chupacabra.

As we've already noted in other threads, the RGL is DOA...

I just find it interesting the GL has continued to be listed in the catalog.

The current Ruger management has ruthlessly discontinued models and model variations that don't sell in quantity, such as the much beloved Old Army.

If the GL redesign project was well and truly dead why do they keep listing the darn thing?

Hey guys, I'm back! Don't get your panties in a wad, give Ruger time. It is still being advertised, just chill and don't be so negative. That goes for drsfmd as well.

I'm not being negative. I was told by a Ruger employee that the project is dead. I haven't seen him recently to ask why it's still in the catalog, but I will, and will post an update when I do...

I have no vested interest in it one way or the other... but I also gave up belief in the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Leprechauns and Santa Claus long ago... the return of the RGL fits into this category IMO. The originals were fraught with price overruns and horrible quality control... why, with the downturn in the economy (and in turn an even higher price) would a return be a financially viable option? There's so many other, better quality, choices at that price point...

The GL is coming back. It is different and it will list at near 3k but its coming back.

That's the plan, to be sure . . . current as of yesterday, as a matter of fact.

Assuming Randy is correct and remembering how many years it took from the initial GL announcement followed by annual catalog appearances until it briefly hit the streets, what say we get up a pool on how many years from now, we will still be talking about its imminent re-appearance.

As far as being "correct," well-- both Beth and Ken from Ruger mentioned it was in the works. Neither indicated that there was any specific date, or that things were not subject to change.

Like most companies, a catalog appearance is not a defining moment. Many, many no longer available items appear in catalogs . . . as do many products that are never manufactured. No news there.

Then what do you make of this comment in the new Ruger mailing?

Quote:
The company is still committed to Bill Ruger's vision of a nice, affordable side-by-side double and is reworking its production system to make it happen.

Erik- It's called marketing. All over the Internet gun forums (not just here), people have been saying that Ruger is going into the toilet because they had lost Bill's vision... so the best thing they can do is a marketing campaign that says they haven't lost their vision and are still committed to Bill's ideals.

I'll believe that the RGL is actually coming back when I get one in my hands.

I decided to ask Ruger directly to see what kind of response I would get. This is the reply I received today:

Quote:
Thank you for using the Ruger On-Line Customer Support Request Form.

This e-mail is in response to your question or comment of 08/15/2008
Request No: xxxx

Comment / question:

Hi -

Is the Gold Label back in production? I am very interested in a KSXSS-1228 as an alternative to a Beretta, but the word on the street is that all Gold Label models have been discontinued.

Thanks!

Response:

Unfortunately, the Side by Sides are not going to be produced this year. Production has been suspended indefinitely on this model.

Bummer - I was hoping this one would succeed.

In the Ruger lexicon, I believe Indefinitely=Forever. The bean counters win again!

I didn't believe Ruger for a more than a year now. I bought a Gold Label pistol grip with beautiful wood on the internet about three months ago. Now I feel even better knowing I'm shooting not only a beautiful shotgun, but also a highly desired collector with very limited production numbers. They will only go UP in value. It's not the end of the world-they are still available for sale.

I just received the 2009 Ruger Catalog. The Gold Label is MIA.
