Can someone help with finding a high quality mag tube that holds as many rounds as possible for my 870 with a 20" barrel.

Thanks.

Hi Len!

Welcome to SGW and to "The Basement"!

Click on this: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=112816

We went down this road, just the other day.
There is a lot of information there, plus, if you'll note the 'SEARCH' button at the top of the page, you'll find a plethora of information about magazine extensions, etc.

Again. . . welcome to "The Basement"!!!!

Keith

Len,
The three rounder should fit just short of flush. I have one on the way for my 20" 870. This web page gives you the length of the three round tube which is 2 inches shorter than my Wilson Combat +2 that comes up about 2.5 inches shy of the tip of my barrel. It'll be here either today or tomarrow and can send you pics of the setup.

Typically, a +2 extension comes flush (or close) to a 18 or 18 1/2" barrel. A +3 comes flush with a 20 or 21" barrel. All the Nordic pictures I see have the extension out well past the muzzle, which is OK, I guess, but I don't like the looks of it. That might explain why Nordic offers the +3 and +4 extensions where others are +2 or +3 for the same barrel lengths. My 18" Express HD has the factory +2 extension and it sticks past the muzzle about 1/2". It kind of bugs me. I was told by Hans Vang in an e-mail that it is that way to act as a stand off device for door breaching. Choate and Tac-Star both make a +3 extension that wont stick past a 20" barrel. Tac-Star takes some knocks for cheap shotgun accessories around here, but their extensions are solid and I like the knurled nut. A mag extension is just a tube, a pipe if you will. It doesn't necessarily have to be machined from solid forged bar stock to be strong and reliable.

Len,
If you look at the link I provided, it will have an overall length of the three round extension at just under 20 inches. It shouldn't stick out past the end of the barrel.

The Remington Police (& HD) magazine extensions are a left over design from the model 870 Mark1 which had a bayonet lug. The end of the mag tube that sticks out beyond the barrel is where the hand guard of the bayonet would be seated....

I don't think the 1/2" that extends out allows the mag spring to compress any farther adding another shell like the Mossberg 590. The difference between the 500 8-shot and the 590 9-shot is the magazine cap that allows that little extra spring compression for a added shell , plus allows use of a bayonet.

I knew that Remington had, in the past, made a military shotgun equipped with a bayonet lug. The smaller diameter nose of the current Remington extensions is of the correct size to accept the ring of a M7 or newer bayonet. But when I look at Remington shotguns with the factory extension, (Police, Express HD, and Tactical) the degree to which they extend beyond the muzzle varies. I see some that are nearly flush and some that stick past like mine does. No big deal. Just looks funny to me when the mag is longer than the barrel. I have seen competition shotguns where the mag is much longer than the barrel.
