I live by the training given by Defensive Edge in Anoka MN. Affordable and very professional.

Greetings

I live in Sun City West, Arizona (36 mi NW of PHoenix).

I want to find an instructor or school within 50 miles of my home that conducts a defensive shotgun course.

Any recommendations?

Thank you

I took the three day handgun course at Sigarms Academy and was very impressed. You shoot, a lot. Very good training on drawing and targeting, including taling cover. The two day Advanced course is also supposed to be very good but I haven't taken it.

I did the 260 Defensive shotgun course at Gunsite w/ instructors Larry Landers and Kirk Scarboro. I then got to shadow, as an assistant instructor, Mr. Louis Awerbuck for two shotgun courses at Camp Pendleton last July as part of our predeployment training. Along the way I met Mr. Hans Vang and toured his shop. These are the best instructors in the world.

There are some Tactical Response Inc classes coming up in AZ in April, Tactical Shotgun is one of them available.

http://www.warriormindset.com/

I took Tac Pistol and Tac Rifle from them last fall, these guys are top notch, and use some unconventional training techniques.

I'll be taking Tac Shotgun, Advanced Tac Pistol, and Sub-gun from them....I'll be sure to post a review after the class.

Has anyone seen an good training sites in northern Cali? Richmond is a little too far for me on a Cal State Payroll. And Thunder Ranch is also out of reach. Any suggestions or should I just bite the bullet and wait till I can afford to travel?

I took the Tactical Response, Tactical Shotgun Class last month. I finally got the pictures up here:

http://www.cavalryarms.com/training/2005-4-11-13-TRI/shotgun/TRI-AP1.html

The TRI classes focus a lot on mindset and tactics. There is a lot of shooting (we shot about 600 shells over 2 days, and about 200 rounds of pistol), the mindset and tactics components are integrated into all the drills. TRI teaches you how to win gun fights. Mindset, Tactics, Skill, Equipment; is the order of importance they teach.

The class started off with basic Fight, Assess, Scan, and Tac-load drills. After each shooting drill (fight), the students were to assess (look that they had neutralized the target), Scan (for other potential threats 360 degrees), and Tac Load.

As the drills became more complex transitions to sidearms were incorporated. Any time a shotgun went dry, or malfunctioned, the students was to immediately transition to their sidearm and continue engaging the threat...Staying in the fight no matter what (mindset) is a key component of what TRI teaches.

We then advanced to shooting on the move drills, engaging multiple targets, and finally to two man team work drills.

Some team work drill vids:

http://www.cavalryarms.com/training/2005-4-11-13-TRI/shotgun/08.wmv

I highly reccomend taking TRI classes. Unlike other training groups that only teach on their home range, TRI flies around the country putting on classes, so finding one close to you shouldn't be hard.

I have not.

But.....

If you are interested, and aren't already aware of it, the Boone County Sheriff's Dept (Lebanon, IN) hosts Louis Awerbuck/Yavapai Firearms Academy for a series of classes each August.
He's a shotgun fan, and holds at least one shotgun session each year.

If you want, I can dig up the contact info. I'm going to one of his pistol sessions this year, so have it somewhat handy. It may be too late to get in this year, but you never know.

I've heard good things about a place in Northern IL called "The Site".
www.shoot-at-the-site.com

Besides that, Lebanon, IN is just a couple of hours from Chicago on I-65. And you get to take a class from the shotgun Yoda- Louis Awerbuck.

A really excellent training facility in southwestern Ohio: Tactical Defense Institute, www.tdiohio.com. I've taken several handgun courses there, and I feel they definitely enhanced my survival skills as a law enforcement officer (classes are open to everyone, LEO and non-LEO). The range is in the beautiful hills common to that area, and I can't say enough good things about the staff - professional, competent, and not pompous or condescending. You will learn practical skills, and you will be training in a safe environment. They do offer a tactical shotgun course, which I have not yet taken, but someday my 870 and I will find my way back there :D ...
For all of the above reasons, and also considering the very reasonable cost of tuition: 9.5 to 10.0.

Mac7 you are right on the money about John and his fine staff at TDI. I have ben there for a couple of different courses and the staff are fantastic. I met a federal leo there that had been to Gunsite and Thunder Ranch also. His comments were that the instruction was better at TDI than either of the other two schools and the costs were a lot less. If you really want to learn training that may help you in a gun fight go with the experts at TDI.
