Ahah, funny, I also started smoking in the army. You see, it just seems to me that it’s impossible to look at how 100 people around you smoke and don’t start smoking. I don’t know how much strong willpower it is necessary to resist the temptation. Probably only a few will cope with it .... As a result, after the fleet I decided to quit smoking but it turned out to be quite difficult and then I decided to switch to vape so that it was not so difficult. As a result, for two years I spent money on vape liquids and smoked only vape and in the end I was able to completely give up cigarettes and this was the happiest moment in my life.

Just out of curiosity, who started smoking in the military when cigarettes were still issued to enlisted men?

If you can, quit cold turkey. Don't count how many days it's been since your last drag, just quit and don't look back. It's a lifestyle change so treat it as such...a new way of life. No sense in "dragging" it out.

That is quite impressive, you are now in a fairly low percentage of people that are still alive that have managed to stay clear of nicotine for that long. Now, do not take a smoke to celebrate!!! That could be all it takes to flip you back.
I have been rooting for you all along! It seems like yesterday when you made the decision to quit. I am quite impressed. It took me 3-4 attempts before I got it done.

15 years for me as of next April 15th; cold turkey is the only way to go. If you also drink alcohol, give your body a break and stop that for a while as most tend to smoke more while drinking. I had several other stoppages, one as long as 10 years; but this time there is zero desire to go back to that nasty habit. Ever notice that ex-smokers are nastier about smokers than non-smokers?

I think of you often, when I think about the whole smoking deal, and how you keep saying do not ever even try one puff, as that's all it can take to flip back.

It has been a journey for sure.

And that is exactly what happened when I relapsed after 10 years; my sister in law is a now and then smoker, she asked me to light her a cigarette since the house was crowded (Thanksgiving time) and she couldn't get to them. Within 3 days I was back to my pack a day. Took me another 4 years to finally quit for good.

Set a date in the future to stop, like maybe 2 weeks away.

Think about it everyday up until that day.

Try to vary your daily routine in some big way
also on that day, so you are not the doing the exact
same activity. For example, on that day you quit
also take up some exercise program if you have
none, and it can be simple, like taking a 30 minute
walk each day. During the walk think this thought,
If I can't quit now I may never quit, because addiction
grows stronger with everyday I do it. It is now or never.

That is a start, maybe you can think of other things
in the time period before your quit date.

Recently? No. June 1994 after 40 years of wasting money. Never crosses my mind! Nasty things!

Update, now a year later, Jan 20, 2021.
I saw my cancer doctor to go over my last pet scan which was done 3 weeks ago.
The result - No signs of cancer on the scan, cancer in remission.

The treatment recommended to me initially was surgery to have
a lobe of my right lung removed, 3 different doctors told me that
was the recommended treatment. If I followed that advice, then
today my lung capacity would be somewhat reduced having lost
that section of lung, probably not a good thing since covid kills
everyone from lack of oxygen.

Instead of surgery I chose proton therapy, where they bombard
the tumor area with protons thrown right at the tumor at thousands
of miles an hour, the protons being spead up to that speed by a cyclatron.
I got two weeks of that treatment, 5 days a week being bombarded with
protons directed at the tumor for about 20 minutes for each treatment.
I had to drive 90 minutes a day monday thru friday to Knoxville, TN
to get the treatment.

So two weeks of treatments, and kept all my lungs, cancer gave up.

Congratulations JC, I had lung cancer in 2017, been officially in remission since 2018.
