Anyone here have any personal experience with water purification tablets? How well do they work? Shelf life? Etc? Would they work on rainwater collected off your house roof even if some birds had crapped in the gutter?

Alternatives to the water purification tablets?

Just thinking of buying some for my bunker.

alternative is plain old Clorox; the web will give the proper ratio

That works, but I’d use a water purification pack able unit. You can get a mountaineering expedition size unit, that will make swamp water taste good.

Years ago I used some tablets for hiking and climbing in the mountains. I guess they work. I didn’t die. My wife got giardia once. It made her wish she was dead. I finally went to a small hand operated filtration pump.

If I had a bunker I would include a filtration pump. There are many on the market. Then there is the old fashion method of boiling the water.

I notice, now, that very few filtration pumps are effective for virus. Never thought of a virus when I bought a pump. In the mountains I have been mainly interested in avoiding giardia, and other critters. There were a few times I drunk some fairly gross water after filtration and didn’t get sick.

The advantage to tablets is they dont need a filter change after "X" # of gallons.

True. But many of the better units go quite a long time ( many gal) before a filter change. Tablets are cheap, easy, and can be stored in bulk.

I’d use them for my second tier purification needs, and the filter first. Sorta like eating the perishables, until breaking out the MRE’s and freeze dried.

If the SHTF, there's a good chance the electric grid will be down, so no electricity and don't have natural gas. I do have some propane for my grill, but would hate to use it all up boiling water when a simple tablet would do the trick.
