Walking out the back door, either an early Iver Johnson Champion in 16ga that my grandfather bought new around WWI or a 20 ga Stevens 311 I picked up last summer. I don't shoot many birds out back but i have a pup coming along so will do so if he handles the bird correctly.

For "real" hunting I generally a 16 ga Browning Citori Upland Special I picked up 30 years ago. It isn't my most productive gun but it was purchased along with my first "good" pointing dog and what I carried with what will be my best pointers. It is a bit light with those 24" barrels but I shoot it well enough.

If birds are spooky or I need to use non-toxic it is either my fathers 12 ga A-5 or my 12 ga Citori 525 Sporting Clays gun with 32" barrels. I pull the lead from the stock to lighten it up some but it is still heavy in some eyes. It is tough to not carry it though as I shoot it a lot and it fits like a glove. A possession limit of Dakota pheasants with a half box of shells is the norm with that gun.

If the weather is bad I'll pull out my Browning Gold waterfowl gun. Camo/synthetic is fairly resistant to the elements and cleaning after getting soaked is pretty simple.

I have other shotguns I'll carry on occasion but those are my mainstays. Especially if traveling.

My golden retriever. Shotgun doesn't much matter, but either my SA20 3" loaded with 1 1/8 of ITX 4's or lead 5's. 16 ga Stoeger Uplander I worked over loaded the same.

SKB 500 12ga Mod/Full w/Winchester 2-3/4" heavy game load #4s. Or a Lefever Nitro Special 12ga with low brass 6s. Depends on the place, and the conditions.

Last year it was 16 gauges for pheasants. This year it will be a Benelli Montefeltro in either 12 or 20 gauge, maybe both.

For opening weekend in SD (5 days, can't wait!). 12ga Benelli Ultralight, 24" barrel, factory IC Choke. Load is right out of Lyman's, Remington 2 3/4" hull with plastic basewad, 800X powder, REM primer, WAA12F114 (Claybuster clone), 1 3/8 oz nickel plated 5's. Screams along at 1215 FPS according to the data, and no more recoil than a standard 3 3/4 1 1/4 pheasant load. Backup gun is 12 ga Beretta 686 Essential, 26" barrels, skeet and light mod chokes. Same load. Might post to this thread again if I decide to head back for a second hunt use 20ga guns the that trip! :-)

Will do my first pheasant hunt with my nephew in 2 weeks.

My father's Fox Model B 12 gauge (newly refurbed...26" barrels), and reloads: 2 3/4 Win AAs with 1 1/4oz #5s running about 1350fps.

He'll be shooting my dad's Browning Citori field grade (circa 1980) 12 gauge with same load.

First time we've hunted together, and first time he's hunted with his Pa's guns...should be a blast.

Been shooting wild birds all week with an 870 special purpose with modified choke tube and 1.25 ounces of #5 at 1330 fps. Shot a triple opening day with it.
