Deborah McKown does a very good weekly article for women shooters on the shotgun life website. I've pasted below her article that came out today on inexpensive guns and trigger pull. It's a good read. MAJ
Ms. McKown states: "As more women become involved with wing and clays shooting, it makes sense that we start out with inexpensive shotguns. But there’s the rub. One of the defining characteristics of cheap shotguns is that they have crummy triggers. For example, the ideal trigger pull of a clays gun is 3½ - 4 pounds. Entry level clays shotguns can have trigger pulls of 7-8 pounds – meaning that it can impact your timing and stability during the swing. Also, cheap shotguns can have a lot of slack in the trigger so that as you start to pull it nothing happens until the last moment, which can also affect your timing.
If you still consider yourself a beginner and find yourself enjoying the sport and own an entry-level shotgun, rather than spend several thousand dollars on a good shotgun take your current one to a qualified gunsmith. A gunsmith can lighten the trigger pull and make it feel more responsive. That way you can continue to develop your skills without making a bigger investment in a shotgun."
