1. Under $4000

2. Over $4000

WHY?

I would add two subcategories to both of the above strata:

a. measured by number of units in use for sporting/5-stand/FITASC (objectively answerable)

b. measured by unit "value" for cost (entirely subjective and endlessly arguable).

Popularity wise in competition circles:
Over: Krieghoff, Perazzi, Beretta, Caesar Guerini, Blaser in that order.
Under: Browning, Beretta, Caesar Guerini/Fabarm, nobody significant.

I changed my answer when I realized you're talking O/U only.

Where do you get the numbers to show a. objectively? I have never seen actual numbers in use, just all of us saying what we see when we shoot. I would like to see them.

I would too. I think that one could obtain a reasonably accurate estimate (for the US) by surveying shooters at the Regionals, Open, and Nationals. Questions to all shooters when they pick up their packets: "what is your primary gun for the Main?"

My point was that the "guns in use" question was susceptible to objective answer. I doubt that the data have been collected to provide that answer, but they could be. Without substantial refinement and qualification of definitions, the value/quality question cannot be answered objectively. Any answer to the question as stated above is merely an opinion.

I thought he wanted to know the best not the most popular. So i answered with the best but most popular would likely be a different answer.

"Best" is a very subjective word.

Both Best and Most Popular are good. One might assume that if they are popular, they are also good. Many uf us use word of mouth to decide which gun to consider.
Thanks

Where does Zoli fit - over or under 4K?

Over... MSRPs of $5600 (Kronos) - $22K+ (Z-Ambassador SLG) depending on model.

A better break point might be somewhere in the $6-8k range since that is probably closer to the mid-range of sporting guns (not counting upgraded wood/engraved guns).

Also CG's Summit Sporting retails for over $4k, but can easily be had brand new in the high $3k range.

Over. Street price is probably right on the edge of $4000. You can get some nice older Lanber/Dakota guns that were made by Zoli at a decent price, but still minor players in terms of "Top 5".

I think you really have three ranges:

Mid-Market (not the cheap POS): $1800-$4000
High-End Market: $4000-$10,000
I have it because I can afford it Market: $10K+

Mid-Market is dominated by Browning & Beretta. Some CG/Fabarm.

High-End Market is pretty even with Beretta, Blaser, CG & Perazzi. Some Zoli, but not a lot.

The rest: Kreighoff and Perazzi dominate this market. Some Kolar & Beretta in this price-point, but they are minor players.

I don't know about registered events, but at my sporting courses the #1 O/Us by a wide margin are the various flavors of Brownings (Made in Japan), followed by Beretta. Those two are probably 90% of the O/Us.
