I don't know if anyone else has had this experience but it seems to me i learn a LOT more from talented shooters i'm squadded with in a FITASC event than on the main sporting event. I think it's a function of being able to see the shooters entire body with no cage blocking them. You really can see all that a good shooter does to prepare, move, mount and break some tough targets.

It happens that i've been squadded with super nice folks and that makes a world of difference. Even the interaction with the trappers is more intimate and fulfilling. The folks trapping/refereeing at Schraders today for the FITASC were, as always, a joy to shoot with.

I surely hope FITASC gains some ground here in the US, organizational issues notwithstanding. If you've not tried it yet i strongly recommend it.

Agreed! At a big event, I would rather shoot 100 FITASC and 100 Super Sporting instead of 200 main event

Give me FITASC over sporting any day... 12 ga. or Sub Gauge for all the reasons you listed as well as the harder targets, lack of repetition of presentations, the comfort of the second barrel and the formality that comes with the rules. It’s a great game!

Formality of the rules is a great observation as well.

Would love to try it, but I am not seeing it offered anywhere around here. I suspect between the old guys shooting and the resistance to change; and the added costs of extra trappers might slow its acceptance.

Fitasc around me is only offered at the big shoots :( But my Club has a challenging Super Sporting course so at least I have that and I'll take it EVERY time over the Sporting course :)

I personally think it's the quality of the referees ;)

shooting 8 or 6 pairs of the same thing over and over and over again looses me, I'm a fitasc guy, super sporting and five stand.

Well said, and I have learned way more on a fitasc parcour then I did in sporting clays. Other then I learned that I don't like sporting clays as much as I love fitasc!

It's the costs of ref's that deter local clubs in having the shoots.

For me , FITASC is the top of the top.

Could it be that you learn more at FITASC because every shooter starts with a low gun ?

i'd happily pay 25% more for quality FITASC shoots if it helped. Not sure if others would agree but at my age i'm after a quality experience and this is the best i've found. It is the very antithesis of trap and skeet and the monotony that goes with them. Bonus is you don't need as much acreage for a quality FITASC event. I guess the negative is you can't run as many people through it and i surely don't want 10 person squads or anything like that.

The cost and time to set and referee FITASC courses are the problem for smaller shoots. From a participation point of view, the numbers shooting FITASC pales in comparison to regular sporting courses, 5 stand, and even sub-gauge. If you can't make money, you don't want to throw it. I am afraid FITASC in the U.S. will continue to be a specialty event for large shoots where the sheer numbers will guarantee enough FITASC shooters to justify holding the event.

FITASC targets are usually harder because that is what the participants want. Although the rules do add complexity and make scoring more difficult, there is nothing inherent in the event that creates the more difficult presentations. You can do the same thing with 5 stand, and run off half the participants.

I will drive a couple hours, give or take, for a registered sporting shoot, but I will travel almost anywhere for 200 birds of competitive FITASC if my schedule can accommodate. I consider it the pinnacle of all target shooting. One of my favorite shoots of the year is the Promatic 500 at Northbrook. Where else can you shoot 500 FITASC targets in 4 days?

Also, sub gauge FITASC side events are a blast. I could shoot 28 gauge FITASC every day of the year.

Anyone else shoot Eagle's Nest last weekend? Dan Bailey and team threw some absolute fantastic FITASC birds.

I am blessed out here in NorCal as one of our local --and soon to be 2 of them-- regularly throw a 50-bird FITASC at their monthly shoots. But like Erie, I still enjoy a well-set sporting course too. Slightly different skill sets though. Fortunately I don't have to choose one over the other, I enjoy them both equally.

Blackjack Sporting in Florida seems to be doing the same - offering a 50 bird event at the regular monthly shoots ; and with those shoots now spaced out over Wed-Sun, (FITASC offered FRI-SUN)he can get that a few more FITASC shooters in

My three step plan to enjoying the shotgunning games:
First, enjoy the people you shoot with and put energy into being a good partner yourself.
Second, shoot as nice a gun as you can and enjoy it. Enjoy using your gun, keep it nice and clean; look forward to shooting it. Third (and last) enjoy your shooting game of choice. All of them are fun if you focus on #1&2. Of course, we all have our favorite games.
