This is my first post here, so please be patient. My adult son has gotten truly bitten by the sporting clays bug and would like to upgrade his shotgun. He is currently shooting an older Winchester 101 field gun and would like a dedicated over/under sporting clays gun in 12-gauge, ideally with 30-inch barrels. We are willing to pay up to about $4,500, and he is open to a good used gun. He has shot a 686 Sporting and a Browning 725, and liked the feel of the Beretta, but not of the Browning. Given that fairly broad criteria, I am looking for suggestions for a gun for him.

Thank you.

Shoulder and shoot as many as you can. These are the guns I would start with in your budget.

Caesar Guerini Summit Sporting
Blaser F16
Zoli Kronos
Beretta 690/694/A400

Both the Beretta 694 and CG summit fit under the $4500 and would be great contenders if he likes the way they fit him

I have both of them on my own personal short list.

Those are the ones to start with. I question spending that much on a gun for a new shooter, but those are all good choices.

i would look for a good used Zoli. You might want to contact Rob Carlson at Carlson'
sporting Arms in WI. https://carlsonsportingarms.com/zoli-used He is a good guy to deal with and if you let him know what you are looking for I am sure he will keep you in mind if he does not have it.

If you buy used, which I highly recommend, be prepared to pay a dealer a lot more (10-15%) than buying from an individual.

I'm not affiliated with the seller, but if the kid can kick in on his own gift, this would be a huge upgrade vs. midrange guns

Tons of options, at that price. If he likes a Beretta, you can get a good used Beretta 682 or 686. You could also get a used Zoli Kronos for under $4000 (but it has 32" barrels) or a Perazzi MT6 with 29.5" barrels for under $3000; I've got them listed in the the classifieds section on this forum and on gunbroker.com .

Going used with a higher end brand will help protect your dollars if he changes his mind on fit/brand/etc down the road. And there is a world of difference between a $5k used Z, Perazzi, etc and a new CG, Beretta, Rizzini, etc for the same money.
