The old question, how to mount the gun

I thought for a while that most of the best shooters are using a cheat mount/premount. After watching a bunch of Nick's videos from various shoots it appears that there's a great variety in mounting methods. I enjoyed the most recent video of the main course at the Wisconsin state championship. I noticed that Gregg Wolf took I think all his shots with the gun out of the pocket when he called for the bird. In sporting is there any consensus on which mount to use/gun position prior to and as one calls "pull."? I realize this can change with each target, or with some shooters it does not.

Depends on the presentation and the individual.

This! Far too many variables in you, and target demands to say ‘this or that’ is better. Experiment with all, on as many target presentations as you can. You’ll develop your own methods.

Find some videos of shooters in the 25 bird super-finals at the World English...

....and you'll see most of them are fully mounted.

BTW , use what works for you.

There again it depends on How well your gun fits You , the confidence you have in your gun
mount each and every time to give you the sight-picture you have practiced over and over for
will come to you too ! There are different degrees of Masters , these fellas show the top 5%
that gun mounting has become a natural instinctive move .
Eyes on the target first !

Some people are going to feel comfortable with different different things. However I think it is valuable to learn to shoot different mount styles. One factor that i feel is important in anyone's selection process is time. If you have a lot of time between calling pull and the break point of your 1st shot then a low gun makes more sense than on a going away trap shot that you want to take quick.

Pat Lieske has a somewhat different approach. On going away trap shots the gun is just out of the pocket, and the more the angle, the more the gun is mounted from a lower position. He likes the same amount of up movement as sideways movement.

For pure competition, fully mounted is ok. But to practice for hunting, not at all

I agree , this approach (kinda) forces the shooter to keep his eye on the target with
a sharper focus ! With the Move , Mount method the gun is matching the LINE of the
target and the Feel of it's Speed , then as the forward allowances GAP is determined
the trigger is pulled / released . A good move always ensures success !
