How different is a cylinder bore from a smooth bore - and do you need to shoot different slugs out of it?

stlouisaaron I believe you are confusing cylinder bore, with a type of barrel. Most shotguns are designed to shoot a shotshell with many pellets or shot. Therefore the barrels are smooth inside with no rifling, since the rifling grooves or twist in a rifled barrel is designed to spin stabalize a single projectile. For shooting shot out to longer ranges, most shotgun barrels have a constricton at the muzzel to keep the shot pattern tighter. The tighter the patter, the further the shot will travel without spreading too thin. Examples of some of the more common chokes or constrictions are Full, Modified, I/C(Improved Cylinder) or if there is no restriction at all CYLINDER BORE. So to answer your question, Cylinder Bore simply means no constriction. You can also purchase rifled barrels for a shotgun as well, sort of making your shotgun into a rifle for shooting single projectiles(slugs).
