Yes, right :) Saiga is a species of anthelope native to Eurasia. But who would name a shotgun after an animal that inhabits wide open spaces and, normally, requires a 300-yard rifle to hunt? The official version is that the name for shotguns came from the name of Saiga the rifle (AK with disabled full-auto mode, smaller magazines and a sporter stock.), and the rifle actually came out first. But...

Back in the bad old days of the "Evil Empire" saiga was harvested - or, better said, slaughtered - for meat. Two or three trucks would chase a flock of saigas at night (the steppes and semideserts that are home for saiga are so level that, ewhen the land is hard and slowless, you can drive at highway speed even in a passenger car of-road). Each truck had in the back a powerfull light beam and two shots. The drivers and beam operators got the animals to run close to each other, and then the shots started shooting into the mass. It was pretty disgousting, but perfectly legal - if you were employed by the authorised agency, that is. The shots used semiauto shotguns with mag extansions - and they believed the perfect weapon for this job would be a 12-gauge AK, mostly for speed of reloading with box magazines. So one of the authorised agencies asked IzhMach if they could make such a shotgun. The factory said no (apparently, at the time they thought the numbers were too small to bother with tooling). But that was where the idea of a smoothbore AK conversion came from, years later, when the factory had to sell something in the civilian market (no cold war, no defence orders). BTW, the "harvest" of Saiga was already abandoned by then, too - and stays abandoned, to my knowledge.

Ported, Polished, Profiled & runs like a dream...
And yes, that's a guitar case...
When the S-12 band starts playing, it's time to leave the show.

Sexy? No? :-D

Jack Travers did a One-Off for me.... If there is anyone in this world who I'd trust as a Saiga Shotgun Expert, it's Jack.

If he made some of those and posted them at the saiga-12.com forum, I am pretty sure he could sell them..... That is cool as hell. Does it work ok with bird shot? I have a Tromix shark brake on mine, and I would take it off in a heartbeat to put one of those on there.

It has more surface area than either the tromix or even JT's comp brake (you can see both on Carolina shooter's Supply)... The front is 2.25" and the OD of the brake is 1.5".. it tapers down in the rear to 1.25" across. The thing is light too. I mean, breaks on shotguns don't work as well as rifles, but it's light enough that it doesn't negatively affect my maneuverability... the one thing the tromix/JT comp brakes have going for them is their weight. They are heavy... like 9oz. This thing doesn't weigh much. Probably less than 3oz.

I want one of the Saiga's so bad!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FziECY1m ... r_embedded

All it needs is a shorter barrel and a rail on top for a trijicon reflex sight.
