Has anyone found out what magazine extension tube will fit this 12ga shotgun.

:s :s :s YES :s :s :s It happens to be from tacstar inc, 7 shot extension made for, now get this!!! benelli nova and super nova. Threads match up perfectly!!! Imagine my astonishment when I found this out. Seeing as how not much aftermarket parts are available for the sa-459.

Now before you go out and buy one of these extension tubes. Let me clue u in on weatherby's infinite shotgun engineering. "I was already to do a drop in fit" of the tac star extension tube when I notice the existing aluminum mag tube seemed like a very closed system. No problem I'll just remove the two screws holding the tube plate, well ok! seems like the logical thing to do. Wrong!! even if you remove the aluminum tube and remove the stock plug cap and spring. There's a lipped edge at the end of the mag tube preventing the follower to be pushed back any further.

What in the Hell!! kind of manufacturer would do that to a shotgunnah???? Now what to do? I'm thinking get out my hand reamer, Wrong!! Mag tube is aluminum hand reaming tends to enlarge and flare soft aluminum. Answer:   Dremel tool with a sanding tip!!! Yay! {hs# removed the lipped edge, now the follower just slides easily pass and everything is AAAAA+ OK in the world with Tacstar Extension tube.

Just saying...........if you don't mind a little DIY gunsmithing.

Thanks, Gman079 that is just what I needed to know. I looked at that lip on the stock mag tube and though the same thing. ( what were they thinking) Thats ok I like to modify things. That is interesting about the Nova mag tube as I just installed an IC Mobile choke and it was for a Benelli/Beretta. {hs#

No sweat!  Turkish and Italian both europeans and same tooling measurements. BTW at a distance once you add that tube extension it kinda of looks like a Mossberg 930 spx of which I have both. Like I've said in another post weatherby for HD with 7 & 8 shot and the mossy 00-000-slugs for house guest that overstay their welcome.

great pics and post gman . don't mean to be a smart@ss, but didn't you toss the warranty out the window with that mod ?

'course if I got a 459 I'd probably do the same thing .
I'll broach that point if ever I need too. Hey! I'll just tell Weatherby what I bought from them was an improved proto-type mistakenly sold to me.

Hey gman079...thanks for the info on the upgrade. I've been looking at getting a HD shotgun for awhile now and actually narrowed my search down to these exact two guns. I was also interested on modding the weatherby if i was to go that route. My question to you is since you have both, what is your opinion between the two? Any pros and cons between those two guns would make my life alot simpler as far as trying to make a decision. Again, thanks for the mod info and thanks in advance for any helpful info you could bring to my attention.

Vtnick - I will try to help you out as best I can with your decision. Keep in mind not to take what you read as gospel but only one's person interpretation.

First and formost these shotguns are mid price level mass produced semi-autos and to compare either one to the several high end ones would be a mistake. Cause when you pay in excess of thousands of dollars for an high end shotgun you expect it to be flawless.
The 930 spx and 459 tr will give you well way more bang for the buck, but thats not to say neither of them have flawless points.

Mossberg 930 spx in 2009 thru 2010 was all the rage and demand for them was outrageous. In their haste to mass produce this model I believe quality control went out the window at the mossberg factory and a whole lot issues started to pop up when it shipped out to customers. Such as canted front sights, loose rear sights, missaligned elevator, bent mag tube and/or extensions, chambering misteps and host of others problems.
The piston action of the 930 spx is fairly simple in design compared to the bennelli's inertia system. But on close inspection of the internal workings I see alot of rough surfaces and sharp edges where metal meets metal. This again should have been taken care of at the factory.
Later produced model seems to be doing a lot better and some of the problems were corrected, current production models will have a larger charging bolt. There is also a Blackwater 930 spx edition that kind of remedied some these factory flaws. In my opinion once all the flaws were reduced the 930 spx is the most reliable tool to have in your arsenal.

Weatherby's 459 TR (tactical response) is their first foray into the Home defense/Tactical catagory. Little is known about this 12 gage but upon closer inspection everything seems to be well designed and put together right from the factory. The piston action is different in its design but similar like mossbergs in function, very smooth with no discernable tool marks or rough surfaces. Pistol grip stock, forend, rear and front sights is very clean in the fitting department. Added bonuses a choke system to get you a few more yards, two piston bushings one for light loads and one for heavy. Other than the 4+1 capacity the 459 tr seems to be the epitome of a home defense weapon. Downsides to the 459 tr is that its relatively new and aftermarket parts are very hard to find nationally. Kind of a quirky chambering of a round, normally when you rack back a charging bolt a shell is release on to elevator and into the chamber. No so with the 459 you have to depress a carrier lock button on the left side to feed a round and then a rack to the back to chamber. Weatherby's factory is overseas and warranty work may take additional amount of time to resolve if ever a problem arises.

TANGIBLES:
The 930 spx has some heft to its feel-equally adequate out at a camp site or the house. Strange as this may sound but that extra weight out in the field gives me a little more sense of security.

The 459 TR for all intense and purposes is light and tight. Even though both guns are equivalently the same, the way the 459 tr is packaged gives it that easily manipilated feel to it. Even the Wifey will be able to post up and do some damage if thats a consideration. To me if its ever needed having that light and tight control in close quarters could mean all the difference in that fraction of a second in shot placement.

INTANGIBLES:
Mossberg 930 spx - Why the numerous flaws in what could be an outstanding firearm.......why mossberg??..........why? Also the pistol grip from choate could have been done way better or offer the original straight comb back to its customers.

Weatherby 459 Tr - Very scarce aftermarket parts, your kind of stuck with the way its dress, unless you are a talented gunsmith. Limited loading capacity unless you do a extension mod and it may or may not void your warranty. Due to the factory being overseas and its unknown if Weatherby will have a stateside service center for warranty repairs.

OVERALL: Slight edge goes to Mossberg due to availability of aftermarket parts and the factory is in the USA. Hope this information gives you a little more insight to your upcoming purchase.

Brigritt- Try looking at Choate, Tac star and Nordic web sites. Keep in mind that it will not specifically say mag extension for weatherby 20 gage. What you are looking for is a mag extension for benelli super nova in the same gage. The treading will be closes that you will find to fit the weatherby sa-20 tr as an aftermarket mod.

Just picked up my sa tr459. The gun dealer told me in CT its against the law to put a mag extension on a semiauto shotgun with a pistol grip. Max capacity is 5 shots. Check your State laws before you do it.
Get with your gun dealer and post up the exact CT statutes covering this mag extension violation. Could make for an interesting debate/discussion on this topic.

mnyshrpknvs congrats! on the new addition.8) Charvey 9 also posted the same mag tube modification on SA-459 TR as I did with a couple of interesting points and what he encountered during his mod, really kind indept review and nicely done.

The search still continues for SA-459 TR aftermarket parts will post up if I find any.

Update on the Mossberg 930 SPX series, they are now coming out with the JM professional series as in lengendary shooter Jerry Miculek. Only difference is all the internal parts, piston, trigger sear and bolt will be chromed. Barrel will either be in a ribbed 22" or 24"in. Don't know if it qualifies as a HD/Tactical piece....per se, more like a 3-gun competion model if you ask me.!! Upgrades to the 930 spx that should have be offered in the first place!!! Ohhh! don't get me started.

I have been told that the Weatherby SA-459 CAN NOT have a magazine tube extension installed without replacing a non-U.S. part with a U.S. made one. Something about having 10 or more overseas parts and if you add an 11th it will no longer be 922r compliant.

BUT as i read it (and I am just a ******* from Missouri) this restriction DOES NOT apply to the PA-459 pump.

Recently bought a PA-459 TR and was looking for an extension other than a Tacstar that didn't required cutting the original mag tube. Found King Armory and they offer an extension for the Escort MP/A (also a Supernova clone) that should add an extra three shots. After receiving it, I discovered the thread pitch is the same, but the threading doesn't begin at the base and on the TR's mag tube you've only got 1/2" of threading to work with. Took it to a local gunsmith who cut 1/4" off the base of the extension and now it fits perfectly. Will be adding a clamp soon and you'll have to buy a separate spring (not included). For all of you that want an extension and don't want to cut your Weatherby or discovered the new Carlson's dont thread right.
