Has anyone out there used AA#9 powder for reloading .410 shells? I used to load a lot of .44 Mags with it and I have about 7 lbs. left. I see that its burning rate is slightly faster than H110 or 296 and slightly slower than Alliant 2400. It says on the side of the container that it's for use in the .410 but I can't find any data for it. Even the Accurate Arms website shows only their 4100 powder for use in the .410. Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

AA used to recommend #9 for the idiot stick. like you, i use #9 for the 44 mag, best powder out there for the big boomer!.

find an older AA manual, it will have #9 data for the wienie gun. :D

i have loaded #9 in the idjut stik! it worked well, but i cannot remember the load! i use itty bitty gun now in the 2 1/2, 296 for max hunting loads in the "big" 3".

I have all four editions of Lyman's Shotshell Reloading Handbook and there's no .410 recipe for AA #9 listed in any of them.

I've got some old AA booklets, I'll take a look. Seems like I have see #9 listed for .410 in one of them, but then I didn't have any #9 so I didn't pay any particular attention to it. I'll look, maybe later tonight.

I got this from a member here that uses WC820 surplus powder that loads like AA No9. I have only loaded and shot one box so far.
I am trying to use up the last of my Alliant 410 before I start using the WC820 surplus.
I loaded it up at 12.8 and it was a bit light so I am now going to step it up to the load he recommended.

Hull: Winchester AA HS
Shot: 1/2 oz. (+9 grains)
Powder: 13.2 grains WC820 (AA No9)
Primer: Winchester 209
Wad: Yellow Duster for first 5 reloads the Rem SP410
PSI: 11,100
Velocity: 1250 FPS

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

That's Winders' recipe.

If you're using a MEC, what bushing did you use to get that 12.8 grains?

I plan to order some of that powder but I don't want a load even approaching 1250 fps.

I was planning on starting with a No. 9 bushing. I think he uses a No. 10.

I think is was a #9. However I modify some of my bushings but I think that one was stock. I now use a modded #10 for 13.2

I still like and use 296 for all my itty bitty shells. I finally got my darn recipie, hull, and loader combination all matched up and I'm afraid to change anything!

Thanks to everyone for your help. I just picked up some 20 to 410 Chambermates and a used MEC Grabber in 410. I'll be loading for the little"idjut stick" in no time.

Looking at my 1985 edition of my Accurate Arms powder guide they had one load for .410. It was a Federal hull and 11.3 gr of AA #9 for 1100 fps with 1/2 oz loads. I really don't know much about AA #9. Whether it is the same as 296, WC 820 or something else I have no idea. I suspect it is in the range, but it is quite a bit lower charge than what one would expect for the same performance with 296. And maybe not, I've not chronographed any 1100 fps loads to see how much powder it does take.
