I have used Hoppe's #9 Powder Solvent on rifles and shotguns for 60 years and never have had that problem. I wipe it off with a rag and don't leave enough on the gun to become gummy though. It is a solvent, cleaner and metal protector but not so much a lubricant.

Yeah, what James said. It's a cleaner, not a lubricant. Don't be leaving it on the gun. I use compressed air to blow it out of tight places like the bolt. Lube with Hoppe's gun oil or similar, but just a light coat.

To me, "heavy" oil means a drop on a toothbrush, rubbed into a groove. Usually I just put a few drops on a tshirt patch, and wipe.

The best info ever. This efford deservers the best. Just wondering for the one shot product. Since i always wanted to see the presence of a lubricant in a gun, i dont know how can i relly on somthing i dont see. How can i determine that is there or gone. Maybe from gun not working smoothly? I shoot sporting with a beretta shotgun. If i spray all the friction points with one shot and let it dry, this will be ok? According to the evaluation it should. Iwas always attracted by dry lubes - no messy oils,greases -, maybe this is the one? How do i confirm its presence? All help appreciated.

if you are ever bored- you might want to try testing STP motor Oil additive and also Mobile 1 -- maybe 0 and also 10-30 weight for friction I think you might be surprised

DIYGUY: Thank you for all your exhaustive research & ultimate findings. It couldn't have come at a better time for me personally. My grandson has an 870 w/ a mild rusting problem. I posted w/ questions about any who may have help w/ the issue. Help came rolling in w/ different suggestions which I appreciated greatly. My attempt at resolving the problem will be first to soak the barrel & receiver in HOT water. Then after it dries I will use, and here goes my question to you, which ever in your opinion was the best water displacing chemical in your test. Militec-1, Eezok or Strike Hold. Then spray it down w/ WD 40 spam Long Term Inhibitor let it dry & hope for the best. Again thank you for your research, findings & any help you can provide me.

I tried to read this post as much as possible, but I guess I missed something. Does "WD-40 long term corrosion inhibitor" cause any damage to shotgun wood or plastic? Can you simply wipe down the shotgun (medal, wood, plastic) and store? Thanks

Leadshot, I had similar thoughts after I bought a can. I began to spray it on the gun but then thought to myself - how is this going to work for lubrication? Will it damage the plastic or rubber parts in the gun? What about the wood? I thought of the tests performed in the OP's results, and while it's great that this stuff prevents rust on metal out in the elements, how will it fair on my prized shotgun, in the safe? I stuck to Hoppe's gun oil and used the spray on my garage door hinges. :-)

My favorite-Frog Lube-has one HUGE weak point!

Everything in your testing about it is spot-on accurate, BUT, when the temp. drops to around 20 degrees fahrenheit it turns into wax, very similar to candle wax.

It will slow down or stop a semi-auto under these conditions.

I still use it all year until late season pheasant hunting. Then it needs to be cleaned off and a light synthetic gun oil applied.

Suggest another product to test, Safari Charlie's, available as a spray and oil. It was recommended by a high end gun shop. It is very pleasant and leaves an orange smell on your gun. Wonder if it is a good cleaner and lubricator when compared to the other tested products or just something the gun shop wanted to sell for a greater margin.
I have been told by two gunsmiths never spray anything directly onto a gun. First spray a rag then use the rag on your gun.

That's why they developed Seal CLP. Same as frog lube but formulated to work in cold weather. It's orange in color, you can grab it on amazon.

Been using OneShot for about a year now on the metal work with a bit of grease on the trunnions and lugs... no issues whatsoever. That said, I keep it off the stock and limit exposure to the fore end (just a quick shot inside the latch mechanism).

What a lot of great work! Wonderful information.... I wish however "Eds Red" would have been included. It would be interesting to see how it competes..
