Suggestions on ammo for new skeet shooter

Hey guys.... I know this has been covered millions of times, but I need a quick answer to a couple questions..... if yall can help me. Sorry to a repeated topic....we shooting this weekend again and I would like to make the change now, if needed.

My son, who is 15, and has been shooting doves about 4 years. He is now on a high school sporting clays and skeet team. He is a thick kid right at 6 foot and 175 pounds. I have him shooting my Citori with 1 oz, Rio Top Sporting 28 load right now and he seems to like them. He likes the gun.

Questions:

Any better ammo I need to get him on now or stay with Rios?
I am assuming the overall thought now is to stay with 1 oz loads?
What about dram/speed? Any suggestions? I think the Rios are around 1280.

I am a hunter and not clay shooter.... any other words of wisdom for a new kid, please let me know.

I shoot and like:

1 oz 9 shot at 1180 fps or
1 1/8 8 shot at 1165 fps.

Not much recoil with those loads, and plenty of smoke with them.

I shoot the Rio 1 ounce most of the time. I would recommend you go to a slower shell. The 1200 or 1210 fps is plenty, especially for skeet. The extra velocity adds nothing but recoil. If you can find 9s, that is perfect for skeet. 7.5 or 8 for sporting. Good luck to your son with his shooting.

OP, True Shot Gun Club often has Rio Elite Extra Lites for $55 a case or less, but shipping can be pricey. Those are 1oz loads at 1,200 or less fps.

If he likes what he is shooting and is doing well, just continue with what he is using.

The title is misleading, but he did say his kid is shooting sporting clays and skeet. Most high school teams shoot all three sports. My son is shooting in college now and shooting trap is not a pleasant experience for him.

1. Buy in bulk at the best price possible. More shells, better shot.
2. Shoot with him whenever you can, he'll enjoy beating you and then helping you get better!
3. Your gun will work fine for him and if it needs a little weight in the stock, that's easy to do and will help with the recoil!

Thanks guys. He is shooting it all trap, skeet and sporting clays. Just got done with practice. Instructor telling him to use skeet chokes in both barrels but some of the targets were 40 yards out. I was thinking IC and Mod but that’s just me.

Or LM/LM if M/M is too intimidating.

He may have just had weak day, but I though he shot better with ic/m the last time. We also trying different shells and trying to decide on that too. Of all we tried, he said the cheap Walmart Estates felt the best. Go figure.

I also, on suggestion from instructor, switched him his favorite gun (new A5) over to Citori... he’s struggling a little but getting better with the o/u. He loves the A5 but thinks the break gun looks cool.

I'd be concerned about getting him using the gun that puts the most shot on clay, not what makes him look cool.

For practice I tend to shoot no 8s for all shotgun sports, but if shooting at a registered shoot, 9s for Skeet, 7.5s for Trap and 8s for sporting. Just my preference. I sure I would miss just as many if I changed shot size.
